Crucial Role of WASH on Eye Care
I have observed that issues on Eye health care are rarely talked about,Majority of people are ignorant on the importance of Water,Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH )on Eye health.Consequently,we have high and progressive vision loss and blindness around the whole world. Did you know that (WASH)are essential components of public health, and their impact on eye care cannot be overstated?Inadequate WASH facilities and practices can lead to the spread of eye infections, while proper WASH can prevent and even treat various eye conditions. This article explores the vital connection between WASH and eye care, highlighting the importance of access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene practices in maintaining healthy vision. Safe WASH is not only a prerequisite to health, but also contributes to livelihood, school attendance and dignity.it also helps to create resilient communities living in healthy environments with healthy visions. Water and Eye CareWater is a cardinal aspect of life and in relation to water ,one needs to Clean and Rinse effectively,Access to clean water is necessary for proper eye health, removing irritants and reducing the risk of infection.one of the ways to treat certain eye conditions like dry eyes, trachoma, eye allergies etc is by having access to clean and safe water.Contact Lens Care: Clean water is essential for rinsing and storing contact lenses, preventing bacterial buildup and eye infections. Sanitation and Eye CareWaste Management: Proper waste disposal and sanitation reduce the risk of eye infections caused by contaminated environments. We can have people to dispose the waste from the environment but from there were is it taken ?I would strongly advocate for a proper management disposal of waste in Zambia, according to my research,’Currently, waste management in Zambia is primarily based on the collection and disposal of waste in open dumps or landfills. Only 10% of the waste generated in the country is collected, while the remaining waste ends up in open dumps or littered on the streets.’ Proper sanitation Facilities: Access to clean toilets and handwashing facilities prevents the spread of eye infections through fecal-oral transmission, which could also be of great advantage that people have toilet latrines that flush into a sewer or safe enclosure . Hygiene and Eye CareRegular handwashing with soap and water prevents the transfer of harmful bacteria and viruses to the eyes.Good personal hygiene practices, such as washing your face and eyes regularly, reduce the risk of eye infections.Promote good hygiene by educating the people. There are different ways in which information can be shared, using different means of communication and different techniques.people with disabilities and levels of illiteracy should also benefit, for example people who are deaf or hearing impairments may need written materials or sign language interpreters, while those who are unable to read in there local language need audio and video readings or social media approach in a language they are able to understand,to mention but a few. Imagine having Increased Risk of Infections because Poor WASH.Which contributes to the spread of eye diseases, such as river blindness and cataracts.Proper water and sanitation is a key foundation for achiev- ing the Sustainable Development Goals, including good health and gender equality. By managing our water sustainably, we are also able to better manage our production of food, energy and contribute to decent work and eco- nomic growth. Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH)play a critical role in maintaining healthy vision. Access to clean water, proper sanitation, and good hygiene practices which are essential for preventing eye infections and diseases. Governments, healthcare providers, and individuals must prioritize WASH initiatives to ensure equitable access to these essential services, ultimately protecting the eye health of communities worldwide.
