Every year around 827,000 people in low- and middle-income countries die as a result of inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene. Poor sanitation is believed to be the main cause in 50% of these deaths and is a major factor in several neglected tropical diseases, including intestinal worms, schistosomiasis, and trachoma. Poor sanitation also contributes to malnutrition.
Taking a review on the situation, the UN General Assembly in 2010 recognized access to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation as a human right, and called for international efforts to help countries to provide safe, clean, accessible and affordable drinking water and sanitation. Also, the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 6.2 calls for adequate and equitable sanitation for all. The target is tracked with the indicator of “safely managed sanitation services”.
As the international authority on public health, World Health Organisation (WHO)has been instrumental in promoting effective risk assessment and management practices for sanitation in communities and health facilities through the WHO Guidelines on Sanitation and Health, Safe Use of Wastewater, Recreational Water Quality and promotion of Sanitation Safety Planning. Understanding the need to highlight the linkages between health and sanitation, the School of Water and Waste, AAETI, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE)in partnership with WHO is organizing its third in a series of webinar events on the recently released WHO Guidelines on Sanitation and Health.
Aim and Scope of the Guidelines: Provide evidence on the effectiveness of a range of sanitation interventions and provide a comprehensive framework for health-protecting sanitation, covering policy and governance measures, implementation of sanitation technologies, systems and behavioural interventions, risk-based management, and monitoring approaches.Critically, the guidelines articulate the role of the health sector in maximizing the health impact of sanitation interventions. The guidelines also identify gaps in the evidence-base to guide future research efforts to improve the effectiveness of sanitation interventions.

Re: SuSanA World Toilet Day webinar "WHO Guidelines on sanitation and health"- recordings and presentation now in the library
Good compilation of data during WTD Webinar proceedings.
Just noted that one of the participant Dr. Vanita Prasad- desired information on initiative to convert human-sludge into resource.
Can cite below one easy method:
Simple pit composting on loading pits with both excreta and cow dung with bio mass ex foliage etc..
The adding of cow dung brings in more acceptability in commnities.
If bio gas plant is available then human sludge becomes the main input.
Output would be bio gas( CH4) and slurry.. readily converted to manure.
Well wishes.

Recordings and presentation now available: World Toilet Day Webinar "WHO guidelines on sanitation and health" - Monday, 19 November 2018, 2:30 - 3:35 PM CET
You are invited to a joint webinar of WHO, UN-Water and SuSanA to introduce and discuss the recently launched WHO guidelines on sanitation and health!
The purpose of these guidelines is to promote safe sanitation systems and practices in order to promote health. They summarize the evidence on the links between sanitation and health, provide evidence-informed recommendations, and offer guidance for encouraging international, national and local sanitation policies and actions that protect public health. The guidelines also seek to articulate and support the role of health and other actors in sanitation policy and programming to help ensure that health risks are identified and managed effectively.
The main audience for the guidelines is national and local authorities responsible for the safety of sanitation systems and services, including policy makers, planners, implementers and those responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of standards and regulations. This includes health authorities and, since sanitation is often managed outside the health sector, other agencies with responsibilities for sanitation. The guidelines were developed in accordance with the processes set out in the WHO Handbook for Guideline Development. You can download the WHO Guidelines on Sanitation and Health in the SuSanA library here .
