Re: New German book on composting toilets

Thanks for your responses Elisabeth and Wolfgang.

I hope you find a publisher soon. I like the practical focus and will be looking ahead with anticipation.I know about the Valley View sanitation projects. Are there any plans to scale up the UDDT's in households? We are supporting Government to roll out the Rural Sanitation Programme and that includes the introduction and scaling up of new technologies in partnership with existing initiatives.

Regards,

Lorretta

Re: New German book on composting toilets

Dear Loretta,

to find an English-speaking publisher is part of the German publisher ökobuch-Verlag. They presented the book at the International Book Fair in Frankfurt, Germany, to receive license requests from foreign publishers. At the moment, there is a licence given to a Czech publisher only. My attempts to find a publisher for the first book failed because it seemed to be too technical or too academic. With the new book, I will try again because it is more practical orientated.

To support your request, check the following link concerning a project in Ghana that I have realized 2009 in Accra in the framework of a German research project:
www.susana.org/en/resources/library/details/1691
Some results from research are also published, if you look for VVU (Valley View University) www.susana.org/en/search?searchword=vvu or
www.susana.org/en/resources/library?search=vvu (the latter searches in the library only)
Best regards

Wolfgang

Re: New German book on composting toilets

Dear Loretta,

I agree with you. I have been bugging Wolfgang for a while to bring out an English version but it's not easy... The German version of his book is really good (actually I only own the first edition from 2008 but I am sure the new edition from this year is even better). I think he told me it's hard to find a publishing house that is willing to do an English version of the book.

He has managed to get a Russian translation done and he told me he has signed a deal for a Czech version (why more likely to have it in Eastern European languages and not in English?). Well, he can write on the forum here and explain it to us (please).

Of course it would also be nice to have a pdf file of the book available for free but I can also understand the wish to sell the book - that is also fair enough (ideal would be if both could be offered like for the great FSM book by Eawag-Sandec, IWA and UNESCO-IHE).

You can find the book's description and some sample pages here in the SuSanA library (scrol down to see the files for download):
www.susana.org/en/resources/library/details/1128

The sixth document for download is an English table of contents and summary from the first edition of the book (2008), see here:
www.susana.org/_resources/documents/defa...ng-toilets-index.pdf

Can you tell us more about your work in Ghana with composting toilets?

Regards,
Elisabeth

P.S. I have added his book as a reference to the German article on Wikipedia on composting toilets:
de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Komposttoilette
That's more of a stop gap measure - I have been focussing much more on the English Wikipedia article, see here:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Composting_toilet
I am still going to add his book as a source for statements on the situation in Germany with regards to legislation. I also wonder if it might be easier to simply translate the English page to German rather than writing a German page from on Wikipedia.

Re: New German book on composting toilets

This looks interesting. This could be very helpful in developing countries such as Ghana.Do you have a translation in English?

New German book on composting toilets

Dear all,

I want to inform about my new publication in German "Komposttoiletten für Garten und Freizeit" (composting toilets for garden and leisure, see information attached). It is determined to allotment holders and to all those, who are far away from water supply and disposal in recreational areas. Apart from theoretical and practical basics for feces composting, detailed information about the various methods for the collection and treatment of human waste are explained and how these methods can be technically implemented for own designs.
The descriptions are illustrated with many pictures and practical notes that may be as helpful for self builders as for buyers of commercial available toilet systems. Existing examples from the leisure sector are shown, how a biological dry toilet can look e.g. at a tree hotel or in a camper. To respect authorities, legal conditions for the operation of a composting toilet are described as well as advices on hygiene and the use of urine and compost in the garden. For those, who want to experiment on their own, a simple dry toilet design is provided.

Some parts of the previous German book "Komposttoiletten - Sanitärtechnik ohne Wasser" (composting toilets - sanitary technology without water, 2008) have been revised and shortened. The new book focuses more on the practical application and supports the reader when choosing the right system.

Best regards

Wolfgang
