Re: Developing a Handwashing Compendium - guidance on low-cost handwashing facilities
Hi Jamie,
That's a useful publication, thanks for sharing. To get more use out of it, and to give it more exposure, I have now included some content from it in the Wikipedia article on handwashing, see here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand_washing (to see exactly where it was cited you can just use the Control+F function, searching for the word "compendium").
Note that the Wikipedia article on handwashing is an overarching article that is about handwashing all over the world (rich and poor), handwashing for medical use, society and culture etc. (every time I look at it I wonder how best to include content about developing countries in it so that it is informative and appropriate).
Regards,
Elisabeth

Re: Developing a Handwashing Compendium - guidance on low-cost handwashing facilities
Dear SuSanA,
Thanks for everyone's suggestions so far. We are pleased to announce that the Handwashing Compendium for Low
Resource Settings is now available online. The compendium provides guidance, local examples of and further resources on accessible low-cost handwashing facilities, environmental cues and physically distanced hygiene promotion. Many thanks for your quick response on one of the images.
The compendium can be found here: www.ids.ac.uk/publications/handwashing-c...s-a-living-document/
Please share this link with anyone you know who may find it helpful. We plan to update monthly for at least the next three months so if you have any feedback or examples we can add, including local innovations, please do let us know. The updated versions will be posted on the same page as above.
All the best,
Jamie

Re: Developing a Handwashing Compendium - guidance on low-cost handwashing facilities
Dear Charlotte
The Booklet Smart Hygiene Solutions V1.1 can be downloaded at
smartcentregroup.com/wp-content/uploads/...s_V1.1_22APR2020.pdf
The focus is on handwash options for the household level which can be made with locally available materials
It includes ideas on a "zero cost handwash bottle", making liquid soap etc but also links to
ideas on creating hygiene awareness and a water game.
Any observations or suggestions are welcome
Kind regards
Henk Holtslag

Re: Developing a Handwashing Compendium - guidance on low-cost handwashing facilities
Dear Jamie,
Good idea to gather information on low cost hand wash solutions.
As SMART Centre Group we are working on a small booklet Smart hygiene solutions that includes affordable options for households and small communities that can be produced with local materials. We will send it next week.

Re: Developing a Handwashing Compendium - guidance on low-cost handwashing facilities
The Portable Alternative Sanitation System is a middle-tech solution that is being used in rural Alaskan communities that lack piped water. These systems aim to improve household hygiene in areas where infrastructure is too costly or where climate change is imminently threatening communities, and therefore permanent infrastructure investment is not happening. PASS is designed so it can be moved into a new home fairly easily if the household has to relocate.
I'm attaching the one-pager here, but I have more information and we are in the process of long-term health and sustainability evaluations of the system. I'd be happy to answer any questions about PASS!

Hi Jamie!
I´ll use this request to throw all of our materials on this at you
The Regional Fit for School program of GIZ has developed the following materials - as Elisabeth mentioned already, usually not taking into account COVID-19 distance recommendations, but since many especially low-cost options make use of a pipe with punchholes, this would just be a matter of adjustment: in the production process the distance between the individual water outlets can be increased (but keep in mind then that this will have an impact on the practicability of the handwashing facility and its use in group settings, e.g. schools).
Here are our materials:
Joint GIZ and UNICEF Compendium on Handwashing Facilities from all over the world
Handwashing Facility Catalogue Lao PDR (English version)
Handwashing Facility Catalogue Cambodia (English version)
WASHaLOT 3.0 group handwashing facility:
User Guide
Production Note
Producation Process (video)
Technological Applicability Framework
WASHaLOT 2.0
Producer´s Guide
Assembly Instructions
Hope that helps - and happy to answer eventual questions!
Alex

Re: Developing a Handwashing Compendium - guidance on low-cost handwashing facilities
Hi Jamie,
I wish you much success with your publication. For what it's worth, I wanted to highlight a forum post that contains "key documents" on handwashing (you've probably already looked through that; it might even be in need of an update):
forum.susana.org/23-hygiene-and-hand-was...gory-on-hand-washing
Will your guide include school handwashing or focus on hand washing at home? I guess the school handwashing is a different topic altogether. Luckily, schools are apparently not usually a prime area for passing on the disease. But the existing school handwashing guides usually show children much closer together than 1.5 m apart, so it would be a challenge to implement "socially distanced" handwashing at schools.
Even for our schools here in Australia, which are generally very well equipped, many parents raised the issue of often missing soap during these corona virus times. Something apparently so simple as having enough soap available is still difficult even in wealthy settings...

Elisabeth

Developing a Handwashing Compendium - guidance on low-cost handwashing facilities
Dear SuSanA,
In response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Sanitation Learning Hub is seeking to develop rapidly a Compendium for Handwashing. The Compendium will provide guidance on low-cost handwashing facilities that can be widely used in low and middle-income countries as well as tips on socially distanced hygiene promotion. We hope that this can be completed and shared rapidly as governments and agencies tackle the crisis in areas where handwashing stations are needed in households, communities, schools and healthcare facilities urgently.
We hope that the Compendium will cover: handwashing facilities (including those that are accessible for all), ideas for environmental cues and communication channels for messaging. We plan to draw on a range of materials from different agencies working in both development and emergency WASH settings.
If you have any resources on facilities, cues or communication channels that we could feature or draw on in the Compendium please do let us know.
All the best,
Jamie
