Re: Sampling of Sludge from Pits connected with pour flush toilets
Hi Nida,
I have been enjoying reading your posts and I am encouraging you to continue to use this community to provide feedback and to be a sounding board for your PhD work.
Are you able to share your PhD topic, research hyphothesis and methodology (and your university research group) with us? This would be interesting.
Also, I have moved your thread into this sub-category called "Pit or vault content research, accumulation rates and faecal sludge characteristics": forum.susana.org/214-vault-content-resea...udge-characteristics. If you haven't yet done so, I invite you to browse the other threads in this sub-category to see what others are doing about faecal sludge characterisation. When doing a PhD it is so important to be aware of what everyone else is researching so that you don't dublicate things.
For example, this paper by EAWAG strikes me as very relevant:
New article: Methods to reliably estimate faecal sludge quantities and qualities (by EAWAG)
forum.susana.org/214-vault-content-resea...d-qualities-by-eawag
Would it be applicable to your work?
Regards,
Elisabeth

Re: Sampling of Sludge from Pits connected with pour flush toilets
because
1. I am unable to find such sampler in the local market
2. the latrines have proper seat/flush and I have to dig a hole for sampling of fecal sludge out of the pit

Re: Sampling of Sludge from Pits connected with pour flush toilets
Hi Nida.
I am curious why you want to design one when they are already available in the market or make-shift arrangements (as shared by Tako) are known? Is it that the ones available in market are not affordable and make-shift ones not adequate for the purpose? It would be great if you give some more information.

hello. hope the picture in attachment shall help you. The one with a cone easity acesses latrines and you ought to think of dividing the metal bar lenth and adapt a screw for cases where we can aces the latrine easily.

Great to note that you are self design-making a Sampler.
We feel proud on you affording time, efforts and passion on this Noble task.
Kudos and well wishes to you.

Thank you Prof. Ajit,
I am now designing a smapler with cup and lid for sampling of fecal sludge with length extension.
Thank you so much for your help.

Re: Sampling of Sludge from Pits connected with pour flush toilets
Thank you Ashok for the reply but I think this type of sampler can work with dry samples while my samples have usually TS ranging from 1-15%

Re: Sampling of Sludge from Pits connected with pour flush toilets
Dear SuSanA Member Nida.
Its nice to note that you are taking specific interest for taking samples in a methodical mode from tanks Etc.
Being a Mariner, who has served on Tanker ships, have expriencd with sampler of bottom level residues in crude - cargo tanks.
The Sludge at bottom mostly comprise of sludges, thick, pulpy very similar to FS.
A sampler is used, and this is in shape of cylindrical pipe made of steel with a flap at the bottom end.
When the sampler is sunk at bottom of tank, a pull rope attached to the bottom flap is ( pulled outward ) used to keep open and the matter is drawn in, by moving the sampler up and down, keeping flap open. This allows the sludge to be drawn in and filled in the sampling tube.
Pl source this device Sampler - Tube ( B S & W ) from a Ship Stores Supply contractor ( called as Ship Chandler ) in a Port City ie Karachi.
Pl feel free to be in touch.
Well wishes.

Re: Sampling of Sludge from Pits connected with pour flush toilets
There is a sampler available in the market for sampling of soil.
It is as per IS 2131.
It is called split spoon sampler.
I think it will work in 95% of the cases.
You can see its images and dimensions on Google

Sampling of Sludge from Pits connected with pour flush toilets
Hello Everyone!
I wanted to characterize fecal sludge contained in Pits connected with flush toilets.
I already designed a sample with 2 inch diameter plastic pipes and at the end there was no return valve but it did'nt work as sampler were mostly thick.
I have already taken sample from 05 pits but I need standardized sampler for sampling. The sludge sample collected were mostly solid, few were in liquid phase.
Can anyone help in designing sampler to be made locally for sampling of Fecal sludge.
