PhD offer: ACF/USTB in China and Mongolia

Action contre la Faim (ACF), in partnership with the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB), is seeking one energetic and motivated Ph.D. researcher to join their cooperative sustainable sanitation promotion program in September 2011. Application deadline is 30 June 2011.

The PhD work will be 3.5 years (42 months) and will involve conducting research in sustainable urban sanitation systems in the Centre for Sustainable Environmental Sanitation at USTB. The Ph.D. program includes at least 3 years of research and at least a half year of course work. The location for the PhD will be in Beijing, China and Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia.

The following is a brief description of the context of the PhD:
ACF in Mongolia is implementing since 2009 an ambitious operational research program that aims experimenting sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene options for peri-urban yurt areas of Ulaan Baatar. The program has resulted in promising eco-sanitation systems and strategies that need to be further explored and scientifically documented. Therefore ACF and USTB have developed a new 3.5 years research program involving a PhD researcher, up to six master’s thesis and some international junior and senior consultants. The program will start in September 2011.

The PhD researcher will mainly work on practice-oriented research project on sustainable sanitation system development for new developing suburban regions in quick developing or transition countries, based on the Mongolia experience.

Title: “Integrated Management Guidelines to sustain pro-poor urban re-use oriented sanitation demand and supply chains are developed, scientifically field-tested in winter cold climates in urban settings in Mongolia, adjusted and edited for dissemination”.
