IWA Project Officer - Accra, Ghana

The International Water Association is seeking applicants for the position of "Project Officer" to be stationed in Accra, Ghana

PRIMARY ROLE:

To support the development and deployment of the Association’s World Water Monitoring Challenge programme and related projects lead by the Regional Office Director, Africa both internationally and regionally.

DUTIES, RESPONSIBILTIES AND KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Under the supervision of the Regional Office Director for Africa and the WWMC Programme Co-ordinator, the Project Officer will be responsible for supporting the operation of the regional office and contributing to specific programmes and projects associated with the WWMC programme. In particular, the incumbent will contribute to the following programmes and projects:

World Water Monitoring Challenge – Regional Coordination for Africa (50%)
• Development of an operational plan that outlines goals, activities and processes in mobilising community members to participate in simple water quality monitoring activities, though the WWMC programme
• Development of educational materials that will support teachers at primary and secondary schools to introduce water quality and its importance into their established teaching curricula
• Outreach to appropriate national counterparts in the region to develop national level programmes

Capacity building in Water Quality Monitoring and Surveillance in Ghana (30%)
• Coordinate a group of local partners including organisations of periodic meetings
• Develop awareness creation programmes for communities
• Launch a website including major study materials, oriented towards primary schools and communities
• Test community level water quality monitoring in a number of communities
• Provide reports and other inputs upon request required for the project completion

Support to other regional programmes programmes (20%)
• Young Water Professionals programme
• Coordination of meetings, workshops and conferences


KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

ESSENTIAL:

 Degree level in any of the following disciplines: Water and Environmental Science, Social Work and Social Administration;
 At least two years demonstrable experience of managing projects preferably in a development context;
 Experience of working with NGOs and CBOs in Sub-Saharan Africa
 Experience of developing and distance-managing partnerships with international or local agencies;
 An understanding of logical frameworks, monitoring and evaluation methodologies and the measurement of project impact;

DESIRABLE:

 Proficiency in additional languages (French is highly desirable)
 Understanding of and experience with the development community and donor agencies in Africa
 Experience and / or knowledge of Ghanaian water sector


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

The International Water Association (IWA) provides a friendly, challenging and fulfilling environment to work in, supporting the development of the global water and sanitation sector. The position will require some regional and international travel (approximately 15%). Basic terms of employment include:

 Initial 12 month contract with strong possibility of extension depending on performance.
