PhD POSITION in city-wide inclusive urban sanitation

The main objective of this research is to develop effective pro-poor sanitation interventions to promote low-cost, long-life infrastructure and services. The focus of the research is to move beyond conventional master planning approaches, recognizing that effective urban sanitation requires multiple partnerships between users, communities, local authorities, the private sector, non-profit bodies and others. The research will be aligned with on-going research projects such as “Small-Scale Sanitation Scaling-Up (4S)” and the cross-cutting WINGS programme at Eawag.

The candidate will be enrolled in ETH’s Institute of Environmental Engineering (Prof. Max Maurer), according to ETH’s admission criteria. The candidate will be based at Eawag Sandec and affiliated with Eawag’s Urban Water Management Department. The 3- to 4-year interdisciplinary PhD position is a 100% Eawag PhD salary and also covers funding for field research. The start is 1 January 2018.

We are looking for a qualified candidate with a strong background in urban sanitation in the global south, good analytical skills and ability to conduct interdisciplinary research. Excellent spoken/written English is a requirement.
