Re: A new-born couple: The Sustainable Sanitation and Water Management (SSWM) Mini-Toolbox in Spanish and SSWM Introductory Workshops in Latin America

The SSWM Toolbox is an open-source capacity development tool for the local level, linking water management, sanitation and agriculture. Since 2013, 24 of more than 800 toolbox factsheets have been translated to Spanish. Coupled to the Spanish Mini-Toolbox, 3 training courses were held by seecon international in Cusco, Lima and La Paz supported by the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB) for IDB’s Water and Sanitation Experts and their counterparts. The way forward is to increase the partner and donor network to continue translating the SSWM Toolbox. Also, more training courses in Latin America are coming up.

Re: "Mini SSWM Toolboxes" for specific Topics or Regions

The SSWM Toolbox is an open-source capacity development tool for the local level, linking water management, sanitation and agriculture.

Recently, several new chapters were added, providing entry points and tailored information on a particular topic or specific group of users. These Specific Topic Entry Pages (STEPs) offer tailor-made "mini SSWM Toolboxes" with a focus on a specific topic or region, compiling an overview on the relevant resources available and amended with background and content within the field of SSWM. Both the concepts presented within the STEP, as well as the linked information from the SSWM Toolbox, are complemented with further readings, awareness raising and training material, case study documentation, ready-made PowerPoint presentations and a glossary.

So far, six STEPs have been added:
  • The SSWM Course for Universities developed in collaboration with the Norwegian University of Life Science: STEP University
  • The Training-of-Trainers
  • The chapter on SSWM in Sub-Saharan Africa, developed in collaboration with GIZ Zambia, the
Water and Sanitation Association of Zambia (WASAZA) and Cap-Net: STEP Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Business Development in SSWM, compiled in collaboration with the international centre for water management services (cewas) and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI): STEP Business Development
  • The chapter on urban sanitation, developed in collaboration with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, as part of the programme “Support to the National Urban Sanitation Policy in India”: STEP SNUSP
These STEPs will continuously be updated and completed, further STEPs being planned (such as "emergency preparedness and response" and "sanitation systems").

We are happy to receive your comments, additions or questions regarding the new content. And if you have ideas for additional STEPs, please contact us via email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Re: The SSWM Toolbox celebrates her b'day and treats herself to a USER SURVEY

Dear all.
On the 1st of November, the SSWM Toolbox celebrates its first birthday. This is a very important day for us all: not only have we reached our 100'000th visit last month, but also can we announce, that the Toolbox has won the IWA Project Development Award! For this special day, the Toolbox treats herself and you all with a user survey. Have a look and give us your feedback: www.sswm.info

All the best

What is the SSWM Toolbox?

The Sustainable Sanitation and Water Management Toolbox (www.sswm.info) is an open-source capacity development tool for the local level, linking water management, sanitation and agriculture. Focussing on human influence on the water and nutrient cycle, it presents solutions for a sustainable use, treatment and reuse of water resources.

The Toolbox aims at capacitating people not only with knowledge, but also with application skills. It provides both help in project planning and implementation, focuses on technologies (hardware) and behavioural change approaches (software), and compiles the relevant further readings, links, exercises etc. for each topic. In that way, it is not a reinvention of the wheel, but the long needed overview on the host of approaches and technologies in the water and sanitation sector. The Toolbox contains also a large library, a glossary, a Train-the-Trainer's section topped by downloadable and adjustable PowerPoint presentations on specific topics.
The Toolbox is open source and for free, but quality approved. It is today used as online resource for both, learning and teaching. This concept is coupled with training courses and workshops based on a worldwide network.

The Toolbox is developed with the support of many partners from SuSanA and is closely linked to the activities of the SuSanA Working Group 1 (Capacity Development).
The SSWM Toolbox has also feedback option via mail, where many Toolbox users come back to us asking questions about different topics related to upcoming training courses, technologies, approaches, regional networks etc. Some outputs of those interactions might be of interest to a larger public.

Based on a detailed user survey and feedback assessement that will be conducted in november 2011 user feedbacks, as well as more general topics and practical issues in relation to sustainable sanitation and the Toolbox content will be discussed in this forum.
This is means, you will hear soon more from us. But in the meanwhile, don't hesitate to give us your feedback here in the section "SSWM Feedback".
