Re: Dimensioning a fixed dome biogas digester 4 a school

Hallo and sorry for not responding earlier, but I did not check SUSANA website.

NCA stands for Norwegian Church Aid, we are one of the largest NGOs in Norway owned by Norwegian churches. You can read more about NCA here: www.kirkensnodhjelp.no/en/

We work in seven sectors of which climate resilient WASH is one program we work in Haiti. In Haiti we have a Joint Office with Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe (DKH).

You can find out more about NCA in Haiti here: www.kirkensnodhjelp.no/en/where-we-work/haiti2/

You can find more information about the biodigesters NCA Haiti has implemented here: www.kirkensnodhjelp.no/contentassets/1f7...igestershaitinca.pdf

During the last years, we had some turn- over of staff and we have a new CRWASH Team compared with the time of the biogas digester. However, you could contact my colleague Joseph Saday, CRWASH team manager: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Dear Manfred, thank you. I would be interested in knowing about their experience of involving the parents in the operations. Do you have a contact there? Also not sure what NCA stands for. Have a good day, Jessica

Re: Dimensioning a fixed dome biogas digester 4 a school

NCA organized parents groups who were responsible to operate the biogas digester and cultivate a school garden. In some few schools the parents added organic material into the digester. Maybe, this was the weak spot of this intervention, that the production of biogas depended on the engagement of parents.

Re: Reply: Dimensioning a fixed dome biogas digester 4 a school

Thank you Elisabeth,
I will go through the documents you were suggesting. We have had some struggles to find the right size for the biodigester in the first instance. This was mainly based on the concerns of how to feed the biodigester during holidays and COVID absences. But we discussed that with several people now and decided to go for a 6m3 digester.
Moreover, at this point of the project, we are developing strategies on how to motivate the students and the parents to bring organic waste from their homes as well as their gardens (instead of burning it).
Thanks, Jessica

Dear Manfred,
thank you for your response. Yes, we are very aware of adding organic materials. We are currently developing a incentive strategy for the students and parents to bring their organic waste to the school as well.
Do you know, if they have coped the additional organic waste prior to feeding into the biodigester?
All the best, Jessica

Re: Dimensioning a fixed dome biogas digester 4 a school

Hallo,
NCA did biogas installations in schools in Haiti in 2013 to 2015. They were technically ok, but only those produced gas where a group of people added organic material. The pee and poo from the 100-300 pupils in each of the schools did not produce biogas. Pupils mostly pee into the toilets, so there was a lack of organic material. Therefore, you need to assure an additional supply of organic material and design the scheme that it is easy to access the scheme with a cart with the material.

Re: Reply: Dimensioning a fixed dome biogas digester 4 a school

Hi Jessica,
Welcome to the SuSanA discussion forum. Nice to hear from someone in Guatemala.
Your question was rather broad... so I am not sure what you are after. If it's design manuals, drawings and alike, have you looked in the SuSanA library yet? You can filter there by technology and by type of document:
www.susana.org/en/knowledge-hub/resource...publications/library

There are a lot of publications about biogas digesters at school, for example for Kenya and India. (thank you to everyone who in the past has shared their project documents and got them uploaded to the SuSanA library)

Have you also reviewed the other posts in this category? Quite a few dealt with biogas digesters:

Elisabeth

Dimensioning a fixed dome biogas digester 4 a school

Dear all,
we are designing a fixed dome biogas digester project for a school in Guatemala. We are looking for people who have experience in the dimensioning of such digesters that are connected to low-flush toilets at the school.

The main characteristics for dimensioning are:
  • Input: wastewater from the low-flush toilets used by 85 students (age 5-10) and 4 teachers.
  • Input: organic material (kitchen scraps & algae)
Anyone here with experience who would like to share their knowledge?
Thank you inadvance,
Jessica and teh Tui'k Ruch'Lew team
