Re: Request for examples of innovative Public Toilets

Dear Manas:

Examples of public toilets in Latin America are not a very common service. In Buenos Aires, the management of public toilets is concentrated in high-traffic points such as transport stations, markets and tourist areas. Although there are initiatives to improve accessibility, challenges related to lack of maintenance and financing persist. Some NGOs and local governments are working on projects to expand access and promote inclusive hygiene facilities for people in vulnerable situations. In cities such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, public toilets are scarce and often require payment for their use. There are initiatives to modernize facilities and ensure accessibility, but safety, cleanliness and costs remain critical issues. In addition, projects often seek to integrate accessible toilets for people with disabilities and adapt to the needs of vulnerable groups. In Peru and Bolivia, access to sanitation already has very low percentages: between 30% and 40% of the population in cities do not have access to sanitation. And public bathroom services are generally provided in the market and are private, meaning that payment is required for their use.

Re: Request for examples of innovative Public Toilets

Hello Manas,

Here is an intresting survey on the use of 24 new public dry toilets in Berlin, Germany:

Apparently the unisex urinals were very much appreciated.
For more information contact Finizio

Good luck with your study.
I would like to hear more about it once it is finished.

Greetings,

Re: Request for examples of innovative Public Toilets

Hi Manas,

I'd be happy to talk to you about the development of The Portland Loo in Portland, Oregon and its spread throughout North America and beyond.  Questions I cannot answer can be referred to the company.

Can we schedule a meeting on WhatsApp or Zoom the week of 18 November?

Please have a look at these websites.  Best wishes with your important study.

Request for examples of innovative Public Toilets

I am compiling a study of innovative, impactful and aspirational Public Toilets across the world, in developing and developed cities / countries. If you know of examples, please do share. If you can answer any of the questions below, or if you have any documents, floor plans, photos, user feedback or connections to implementing parties, that is a bonus!! Thank you very much.

For such cities, we want to understand:

1. What was the existing status of public toilets in that city / country? What was the problem felt by people? Why did this problem exist?

2. What kind of public toilets were developed as a response? Some details around the following would be useful:
   - Policy: Improvement or change in policy, by-laws for public toilets, tenders issued etc
   - Technical Innovations: Better designs, materials, circularity, sustainability, integrated services etc
   - Social Outcomes: More focus on gender, inclusion, accessibility etc, promoting local culture or sense of belonging / identity
   - Contract and Process: New organization or institutional forms to build, finance and operate these--PPPs, new kinds of O&M contracts, partnership for financing and operations with multilateral or private parties
   - Financial: Any info on capital costs and O&M costs, sources of funds

3. What is the impact and outcomes of these toilets? What are the future goals / targets and plans?

4. What are the challenges and problems faced already or expected in the future,  and lessons learnt? Who are the key stakeholders involved in this effort?
