Re: ‘Farewell to Open Defecation project: Close out virtual workshop’ (Nigeria) - Jan 28, 10 am

Dear Babalobi,

Thank you for the announcement, we look forward to the Zoom meeting and hope that the discussions also weigh in on some of the lessons learned from the implementation of this project as much as they weigh in on project achievements.

I would like to quote from a media outlet website that did a piece on the project: westernpostnigeria.com/bread-of-life-ngo...ic-toilets-in-ekiti/

Each of the toilets, also known as Sanitation Demonstration Units (SDUs),  has a block of gender sensitive water flushed toilets,  urinals, handwashing facilities, bathing room, laundry, car wash fitted with an overhead car port, a borehole fitted with a solar powered 1.5hp submersible pump, 4000 litres water tank mounted on a 3m suction, public water supply points, and onsite waste water treatment facilities.

The quality of the toilets is quite a number of steps up the sanitation ladder from open defecation, which is great to see. Often times OD interventions take a more 'CLTS' approach, leading populations slowly up the ladder. What is your take on the cost factors and the potential scale-up as a result? Are interventions that address OD using much more advanced technologies sustainable and easy to replicate by the target communities or is this dependant on funding sources?

I thought to add the image of the toilets within the thread. Really nice! and would have also appreciated some images of the inside.
