Re: Safely managed sanitation in public hammams?
There are three main ways to meet the criteria for having a safely managed sanitation service. People should use improved sanitation facilities which are not shared with other households, and the excreta produced should either be:
1. treated and disposed in situ,
2. stored temporarily and then emptied and transported to treatment off-site, or
3. transported through a sewer with wastewater and then treated off-site.
4. Public toilet maintained by experienced and capable NgO/self help group etc

Hi Alice,
You said:
Do you mean mainly for washing or also for toilets? I guess for toilets it wouldn't be overly practical as you couldn't scatter those hammams all over the place, but toilets need to be close to where people live.
How would you structure the entrance fees?
With regards to wastewater treatment, I guess you would end up with a lot of greywater. What is your plan to treat that, or would they have a sewer connection to a centralised sewer system?
Regards,
Elisabeth
P.S. If someone wants to look up what a hammam is, have a look at this Wikipedia article with nice images: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkish_bath

Has anyone ever heard of sanitation and hygiene interventions in public baths?

Safely managed sanitation in public hammams?
Dear Sanitation Community,
I work for the GIZ global programme Sanitation for Millions, which aims at improving access to safe sanitation in public institutions (currently in schools, mosques and health care facilities in Jordan, Uganda, Pakistan).
We are considering public baths such as hammams (mainly to be found in Northern Africa) as potential opportunities to improve access to sanitation in the public space.
Has anyone ever heard of sanitation and hygiene interventions in public baths?
Looking forward to your replies and comments.
Alice
PS: Kindly find attached a Factsheet of the programme Sanitation for Millions.
