Re: A Free Webinar – Using Human Waste to Enhance Soil in Case Studies from Around the World—with Dr. Diane Austin and Sowmy

Thursday, February 21, 2013

9:00–10:00 a.m. MST

Composting toilets are particularly useful in parts of the world with limited sanitation infrastructure, and have many benefits in developed countries as well. Not only do these systems prevent contamination of drinking water and reduce use of potable water for flushing toilets, they also transform human waste into "humanure," which can be used to enhance soil for food production and regenerate topsoil in degraded ecosystems. Despite these benefits, there are many barriers to implementation, including social stigma, limited resources, and building the community capacity to maintain systems.

Dr. Diane Austin of the University of Arizona's Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology and Watershed Management Group’s Sowmya Somnath will discuss the challenges and successes of implementing community-based eco-sanitation projects around the world, including in Maharashtra, India; Deou, Burkina Faso; Nogales, Mexico; and Tucson, Arizona, USA.
