Seeking data contributions for a compilation of information on recycled fertilizers from human excreta (Project MARA)
Dear SuSanA Community,
I hope this message finds you well. I am posting on behalf of Corinna Schröder, a researcher at the Network for Sustainable Sanitation Systems (NetSan) e.V., who is seeking support and input for her important research project: MARA – “Meta-analysis of scientific data on the composition & effects of recycled fertilizers from human excreta.”
About Corinna:
Corinna has a background in environmental engineering and circular economy. Since 2019, she has been working on projects related to Resource-Oriented Sanitation Systems (ROSS).
Project overview:
The MARA project aims to conduct a comprehensive meta-analysis on the quality and fertilizer value of products derived from ROSS/NASS (resource-oriented sanitation systems). This study will provide a condensed overview of the global scientific data from the past 15 years (2009-2024), focusing on:

- Fertilizer production processes and control parameters
- Fertilizer properties (nutrient concentrations, hygienic parameters, contaminant concentrations, including pharmaceutical and personal care product values)
- Agronomic effects (fertilizing effects, nutrient use efficiencies, soil- and ecotoxicological effects)
How you can help:
Corinna is seeking contributions in the form of:
- Publications
- Unpublished data sets or grey literature
- Contacts with working groups or projects that could provide relevant data
