Re: New factsheet of WG 12 (WASH - Nutrition)

Dear SuSanA WASH & Nutrition members,

After the Working Group meeting at the Welthungerhilfe in Bonn, I would like to raise the issue on how to optimize the factsheet on WASH and nutrition in the forum.

Great efforts have been put in the document with an impressively long and detailed table of studies and evidences. This "draft version" factsheet is already being used in many occasions. A review of the factsheet will thus be a valuable investment of time and effort.

The points that came up in the discussion comprise:
  • Update table of evidences
The last publication listed is from 2013, what has happened since? What are the latest and valuable publications of the past two years?
  • Expand the five main axis
The “Olympic Rings” form the basis of the WASH in Nutrition strategy; brief explanations to each one of the axis would ensure a better understanding of the strategy and give them more significance in the factsheet
  • Include short descriptions to embed the graphs/maps
Highlighting the main findings that can be drawn from the graph or map helps understanding the data better
  • Throw light on SDGs
What are the interfaces of WASH & nutrition with the SDGs? E.g. wasting has been officially listed as SDG target
  • Clarification of WASH & nutrition
The factsheets deals exclusively with undernutrition as it is the nutrition problem #1; the idea is to rename the factsheet into WASH & Undernutrition or to include 2 sentences in the introduction to justify this focus
Overarching thoughts on the factsheet include:
  • “Nutrition perspective”
There is a need for a closer consideration of the nutritional security perspective overall in the factsheet and requires nutrition experts to have a closer look
  • WASH in nutrition AND nutrition in WASH – careful to not limit interventions of both sectors to its common interface
Malnutrition needs multisectoral support: Health services, nutrition sensitive agriculture, Natural resource management/environmental protection, health services, care ...
WASH is more than its nutrition component: e.g. economic development, education, dignity etc...
  • Target Group
Who reads the factsheet and what are the most relevant information that should be included? The SuSanA community is extremely diverse, what makes it a challenge to create a document for various readers (practitioners, engineers, decision-makers, beginners…)
  • Series of factsheets
The current factsheet has a strong focus on research with its detailed table of evidence. Including other thematic chapters (governance framework, best practices, capacity building…) cannot fully be included as it would go beyond the format of a factsheet. Nevertheless can information on these topics be collected and later form the basis of additional factsheets in the same category.
What to do now?
  • Read the factsheet
  • Identify the point that interest you and that you want to optimize
  • State your idea about your contribution here in the forum and send an email with your comment/input to the working group leads Claire Gaillardou and Stephan Simon
  • Claire and Stephan will include your input in the factsheet using the sanitation portal of the Wiki platform *
  • Follow the optimization process of the factsheet on the Wiki
  • Finalisation of the factsheet in summer 2016
The main objective is to engage interested people in the revision process and have an updated final factsheet in in the first half of 2016.

Looking much forward to your contributions!

Best regards,
Jona

Re: Factsheet - Wash/Nutrition

Dear members,

Let me first send you my best wish for 2014. This year has been the launch of the Wash and nutrition working group and as far we have done very well. I hope to see in 2014 a scaling up of the interaction on the subject and further discussion.

It has been a longtime we’ve not interacted on the Wash/Nutrition subject and I would like to reactivate the network. Our work in 2013 has led us to the development of the Wash/Nutrition Factsheet. You will find attached the latest version of the document. This document has been peered by some of you but a final review might be beneficial before we validate it.

If any of you have some comment please do not hesitate to add/amend this document and send it back to me.

Re: New factsheet of WG 12

Dear WG12 Colleagues,

Just a quick note to remind you of the Shared Folder set up on Google Drive for collaborating on the draft WG12 Fact Sheet.

Unfortunately, Google won't allow us to edit MS Word files, so we've added a Google Document version of the file to the folder (docs.google.com/document/d/1kRVEC65fKi8C...yR3CZza66sxwUog/edit) so that we can add all our ideas into one file rather than having a plethora of different versions, which isn't very useful for collaboration. This also means that we won't have to add titles and dates to the files.

Please bear with us on this - we're feeling our way a little as there have been some recent changes to Google Drive. If you are experiencing difficulties or are not sure what to do, please contact us and we'll endeavor to assist you.

Best regards

Re: New factsheet of WG 12

Dear all,

Following the initiative or our colleague Richard, we invite you to share your comments on the Fact Sheet via "Google Drive"

To make it easier for us to share and review each other's suggestions and ideas for the WG12 WASH and Nutrition Fact Sheet as well as collaborating on other tasks.

As a result, a folder, which contains the draft of the fact sheet, has been created on Google Drive. This folder is named WG12 - WASH & Nutrition. An email will be sent to you, which will say that 'I've shared an item with you. WG12 - WASH & Nutrition.'

If you are not sure what Google Drive is, or if you are not sure how to use it, then to help guide you through the basics please spend a little time reading this webpage: www.wikihow.com/Use-Google-Drive

To briefly summarise some of the main elements - at the beginning of this page it gives you a brief description of what Google Drive is, what you can use it for, and how much free storage you get. After that it tells you how to log in to Google Drive - don't worry if you are not a Gmail user, but you will have to sign up to a Google account. When you get into your account, you need to look for 'Shared with me' on the left hand side of the screen. Click on this and you will find the folder with the draft fact sheet. However, if you're not sure please read the above wikihow.com page or contact us for assistance.

Also, if you are making changes to documents or adding versions of documents, then please make sure you save them appropriately with at least your initials, the date and the document's title. This will ensure that documents are kept safe and easily compiled.

Thank you all for your collaboration,

Kind regards,

Mercedes

Re: some ideas for the draft WG12 fact sheet

Dear Sector Colleagues,

Please find attached some ideas for possible inclusion in the draft WG12 fact sheet.

Please let me know if you would like to discuss any of these ideas, which are based on some of the best practices of integrating Nutrition, WASH and Food Security that I've encountered so far.

I'd be very interested to read about other people's experiences.

Best regards
