Introducing Horizon International, Yale University: A new partner organisation of SuSanA

We would like to welcome Horizon International, Yale University from the United States as a new SuSanA partner organisation!

The following text is taken from their application form and which was written by the partner organisation themselves.

Description:
Horizon International works to find and advance solutions to vital concerns in the interconnected areas of health, the environment, population and economic well-being through its programs, websites, publications, lectures, conferences, and consultancies. The organization, based at Yale University, focuses on needs that it can most effectively address, prioritizing initiatives that are most pressing and that inform and inspire positive action with the help of its Scientific Review Board, Special Advisors, and many collaborating entities. Water, sanitation and hygiene have been a major focus of the organization for the past 6 years.

Activities in Sustainable Sanitation:
Sanitation and diseases attributable to lack of adequate sanitation are addressed in throughout Horizon International’s book and its accompanying 4-hours of multimedia DVDs, “Water and Sanitation Related Diseases and the Environment: Challenges, Interventions, and Preventive Measures,” (read about at www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0470527854.html), in articles published on the Horizon International Solutions Site at www.solutions-site.org, in collaborative efforts with other organizations, and in lectures, conferences, videos, and discussions. The book was written by 59 experts from the fields of public health, medicine, epidemiology, environmental health, climate change, environmental engineering, and population research. It covers access to and the maintenance of clean water, and includes guidelines for the safe use of wastewater, excreta and greywater along with examples of solutions.

The DVDs contents are described in an insert, available at www.solutions-site.org/dvd/insert.pdf, that accompanies the DVDs which Horizon International is giving for free to thousands of libraries and institutions in 139 less-wealthy countries as part of the multidisciplinary resources The Social Science Library (SSL) the Global Development And Environment Institute (GDAE) at Tufts University, at ase.tufts.edu/gdae, is distributing. These resources cover topics from anthropology to economics to global health. More than 1,500 university libraries and institutions in more than 55 countries now have these resources.

The book’s Supplementary Material for the book includes more than 49 articles (with images), published in part and listed on a Wiley-Blackwell companion website for the book, www.wiley.com/go/selendy/water and published on the Horizon International Solutions Site www.solutionssite.org. Among them, a recent series of articles entitled "Realizing Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for All." The first article, at www.solutions-site.org/node/1255, focuses on the background of the problem including the few facts cited in this letter. This article is largely based on and contains many quotes from our book.

Production of popular versions of the book and DVDs to which Supplementary Material will be added are in the planning process.

Expectations in the Partnership:
Horizon International anticipates the benefit of learning from SuSanA and its Partners, that they will take advantage of Horizon International’s invitations to cooperate on projects, and that the organization might assist with SuSanA initiatives. The organization invites SuSanA and its Partner’s suggestions as to additional means to collaborate.

SuSanA and its Partners are invited to submit articles for possible publication in the book’s Supplementary Material (reviewed). In particular, Horizon International invites submission of articles on successful approaches for possible inclusion in the series "Realizing Sanitation and Hygiene for All." The first article, available at www.solutions-site.org/node/1255, focuses on the background of the problem and what it means for nearly half the people of the developing world who lack adequate sanitation and hygiene. This article is largely based on and contains many quotes from our book, Water and Sanitation Related Diseases and the Environment: Challenges, Interventions, and Preventive Measures.
SuSanA and its Partners are invited to benefit from and participate with the dissemination of the Social Science Library, mentioned above and described in an article by Dr. Neva Goodwin available at www.solutions-site.org/node/823.

Contribution to SuSanA:
As a multidisciplinary organization with a focus on finding and advancing solutions Horizon International can work with SuSanA and its Partners to strengthen consideration of and spread awareness of crosscutting concerns such as addressing water, sanitation and hygiene related diseases, and agricultural, ecological and health aspects of climate change and impacts on sanitation and water needs.
SuSanA and its Partners can, for example, collaborate with Horizon International in the ways listed above, including contributing to Horizon International’s book’s Supplementary Material, participating with the dissemination of free resources, and advancing further collaborative efforts, and by submitting related articles and case studies of possible publication on the Horizon International Solutions Site.
