Re: Human urine, an agricultural fertilizer

Thanks Scott, we can make optional treatments to stabilize the urine and enhance nutrient availability, and then after use charcoal/biochar. This could make a real interesting product.
Our project focuses on creating a revolutionary fertilizer by combining compost and nitrified urine, followed by fermentation. This unique method enriches the soil, boosts plant growth, and supports environmental sustainability. It's an innovative approach for productive and planet-friendly agriculture.

Re: Human urine, an agricultural fertilizer

Hi, we collect the urine from the public UDDT toilets and transport it to the bamboo charcoal factory. One ton charcoal absorbs 0.5 ton urine and it still looks quite dry. We did some tests filling an empty bucket with charcoal and let the urine go into the bucket...no bad smell at all.

Re: Human urine, an agricultural fertilizer

Hi all, thanks for all your advices !

@Niranjan realy interesting, a better way than vinegar to avoid smell. I didn't know can be so useful. Can you please send me an email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and let me know more about your product ?

@Scott @bsoutherland you have the same realy interesting vision. What is your process ? You use urine on charcoal/biochar and let it dry (ratio ?) ? Did you try to use charcoal/biochar directly at collect point as well ?

Thanks !

Re: Human urine, an agricultural fertilizer

What we are doing in China is mixing the bamboo charcoal with urine as the fertilizer generating carbon credits.  15% of the oranges are 0.75-1.0 kilo with charcoal and urine as the fertilizer.

Re: Human urine, an agricultural fertilizer

I recommend pyrolyzing crop waste into biochar. Urine is an excellent inoculant for biochar. Biochar adsorbs urine and eliminates odor.

Re: Human urine, an agricultural fertilizer

Hi Eric

Human urine contains urea and uric acid which won't produce any smell until you add water to create the ammonia. EM is effective microorganisms mainly Yeast, Lactobacillus and Photosynthetic bacteria. This EM rather breakdown the urea into nitrogen which is in the air.

Beneficial Microbes make lot of miracle. For EM youtube link:

Re: Human urine, an agricultural fertilizer

Hi Niranjan,
Thanks a lot for you sharing. For sure one of the biggest challenge is to collect urine and manage at the same time smell...
I don't understand how you manage smell with Effective Microorganism, can you please explain ?
Thanks !

Re: Human urine, an agricultural fertilizer

Dear All,

In our office we created a waterless urinal where we don't need water to flush the urine and further this urine is collected separately in a container and added into the compost heaps. The nitrogen level in the compost will be increased and goes to the garden soil. Smell in the rest room is controlled by Effective Microorganism.

Photos attached for your reference.

Re: Human urine, an agricultural fertilizer

Hello EcoFertilys

We have shipped Solar-Drippers in Madagascar in 2019 to Loowat.  ( See Picture)

They used-it for watering and to apply a human fertilizer from a sanitation process.

It was used also in Burkina Faso, in Uzbekistan and we just shipped to Papua last week.

With the Solar-Dripper you can use urine directly with a simple dilution ( about 5 % urine is ideal and we have tested up to 25 % also).

See : solar-dripper.com/en/how-to-use-urine-fertilizer/

solar-dripper.com/en/drip-irrigation-efficiency/

Feel free to contact me if you want to try this proven solution.

With the Solar-Dripper unique surface tension regulator, you can use unfiltered water, rain water, river water without clooging problem.

It last 15 years.

P.S. The Solar-Dripper is available a preferential NGO rate or via this link : oriaz-environnement.sumupstore.com/artic...s-solaires-agricoles

Re: Human urine, an agricultural fertilizer

@Hans-Andre  You're right, it's better to go step by step, phase by phase. Without a doubt, the issue of using urine as fertilizer is very promising on any scale, the important thing is to gain confidence.

@Hans-Andre Tienes razon, es mejor ir paso a paso, fase por fase. Sin duda el tema de uso de orina como fertilizante es muy prometedor a cualquier escala, lo importante es agarrar confianza.
