Re: Announcing the RWSN Mentoring Programme (ENG/ FR/ SP)

Thanks Paresh for your interest! So in 2019 and 2020, we opened registration for the mentoring programme for two weeks only, and received hundreds of applications for mentors/ mentees each time; in the end we had 240 mentee/mentor pairs in 2019, and 340 mentee/mentor pairs in 2020. In both cases, matchmaking was done manually by the RWSN Secretariat, but as this was not the most efficient way of doing things (it can be difficult to find the right mentor for someone based only on a motivation letter), we decided to do things differently this year.

On 2021, we used an online platform where mentors and mentees register interest for mentoring, and look for their own mentor/ mentee directly. We currently have 156 participants in the mentoring programme. This lower number compared to previous years may be because this time, we did not give a deadline to register. This is because in previous years, we had a lot of disappointed people write to us when they had missed the deadline for registration, so we wanted to make it more open and flexible this time.

One mentee can only have one mentor, but one mentor can have as many mentees as they'd like - we even have some superstars who mentor up to 10 people! This is really good, because the number of mentees far exceeds the number of mentors. Overwhelmingly mentees (young professionals and women in the water sector) are looking for career advice. Sometimes they look for technical advice too, e.g. for support writing a masters thesis on a particular topic, etc. If the mentor cannot help with this, he/ she often tries to connect the mentee with someone who can. Ultimately, the mentor is not someone who is supposed to know everything, but who can help the mentee with one aspect of his/ her career progresssion.

I hope this is helpful, for more information you can see our website, including a video testimony of former mentors and mentees: rural-water-supply.net/en/rwsn-for-young-professionals
and you can register directly here as a mentor/ mentee (note mentees must be under the age of 35 if male; women of all ages can be mentees. ):  www.pushfar.com/employee-register/qABRrWVvD1/

Best wishes

Re: Announcing the RWSN Mentoring Programme (ENG/ FR/ SP)

Dear Meleesa,
Thanks for posting an update. Given that the programme is in its third year, would be interesting to know the number of participants (as mentors and mentees) in the earlier iterations and their mix in terms of gender and geography.

Also curious what do mentees typically seek mentoring for? The current form indicates it is typically about career (job hunting or career progression) and thematic expertise. Hypothetically, if a mentee seeks both, are they connected to two mentors or one mentor supports in both the areas.

Regards

Re: Announcing the RWSN Mentoring Programme (ENG/ FR/ SP)

Dear all,

Just to clarify that there are still places left in the RWSN mentoring programme for mentors AND mentees, so if you're interested in receiving guidance on your professional development, or passing on what you have learnt to the next generation of water professionals, do sign up!

Re: Announcing the RWSN Mentoring Programme (ENG/ FR/ SP)

Dear SuSanA members, (français / español)
In 2021, for the third consecutive year, RWSN is running its  mentoring programme for the water sector . Hundreds of our members have already participated in the RWSN mentoring programme in previous years. This year, it will be run slightly differently as we are using an  online platform  for mentors and mentees to be able to find each other directly, and we are expanding the “mentee” category to include all women in the water sector. We especially need mentors in the sanitation and WASH sector more broadly.

How does the RWSN Mentoring Programme work? Our mentoring scheme connects a mentor and a mentee in the water sector and is expected to last at least 6 months to help mentees at the beginning of their career or during a career transition. Mentors and mentees find each other via our  online platform , and then maintain communication through Skype, WhatsApp, email, messages etc.

What are the benefits of the RWSN Mentoring Programme? To get an idea of the benefits of participating in the RWSN Mentoring Programme, you can watch  this video  where some of the 2019 RWSN mentees and mentors  shared their experience, and read the blogs from some of our mentors and mentees from the class of 2020:  Byamukama Arinaitwe (Uganda) and Engineer Oria-Usifo Ehi Ekiado (Nigeria) Joshua Azaki (South Africa) and Dr. Vassiki Sanogo (USA) Janvier Ngabo (Rwanda) and Nura Boru (Ethiopia) ; and  Amanda Mugwambi (Zimbabwe) and Susana Sandoz (Canada) .

Who is the RWSN Mentoring Programme for?
The 2021 RWSN Mentoring programme is open to all RWSN members and free of charge, thanks to the financial support of  SENSE Foundation . If you are not yet a RWSN member, you can join RWSN  here .

Mentees: Young professionals under the age of 35 and women of all ages are eligible to be mentees.  In the past, the mentoring programme aimed at matching young professionals under the age of 35 with more senior professionals in the water sector. This year, backed by popular demand and feedback from participants last year, we have expanded the mentee category to include not only young professionals but also women of all ages working in the water sector. There is no minimum level of experience required. Students are welcome to participate. Mentees who have participated in the RWSN mentoring programme previously in 2020 and 2019 are not eligible to participate as mentees again in 2021 (but they can participate as mentors if eligible).
Mentors: There is no age requirement for mentors (senior professionals), but they should have a minimum of 5-7 years of professional experience in the water sector. We are looking for a range of mentors with different levels of experience and a variety of skills, so don’t hesitate to apply even if you feel that you may not be ‘senior’ enough. Mentors are welcome to participate in the RWSN mentoring programme as many times as they want.

We strongly encourage women to sign up both as mentors and mentees, as they are currently under-represented in our membership and in the sector more broadly – and we would like this to change!

Interested and want to join as a mentor, mentee, or both? Read our guidance document first (in  English French  or  Spanish ) to check that you understand your role and are eligible, and then sign up through our  online platform  (register at the bottom of the page). You may find these  guidelines  helpful to navigate the online platform. The number of participants of the RWSN Mentoring Programme is capped at 300 this year, on a first-come, first-served basis – so sign up early to avoid disappointment!

Would you like to mentor a young professional in West Africa?

Hello,

In 2020, the Rural Water Supply Network is launching a mentoring scheme aimed at matching young professionals under the age of 35 with more senior professionals in the water sector. In particular, we are looking for a mentor in the sanitation sector, for a Young professional (a female PhD researcher working on low-cost fecal sluge management in West Africa. She is looking for someone who has experience writing academic proposals and review papers in the field to mentor her this year).

Anyone with more than 5 years of experience in the sector can be a mentor; we especially encourage women to apply. You can find more information about the RWSN mentoring programme here: www.rural-water-supply.net/en/rwsn-for-y...-young-professionals.

If you would like to mentor one of these young professional, please get in touch with the RWSN Secretariat (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
