Position Summary:
The Water Institute at UNC (WI) was established in 2009. It is hosted within the Gillings School of Global Public Health and the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering. The WI: focuses on the interfaces between water, health and development; fosters partnership across UNC nationally and worldwide; works with government, industry and civil society; pursues quality in its work; tackles issues of major importance to global public health; acts inter-disciplinarily and inter-sectorally; and recognizes and enhances the contributions of science, technology, management, enterprise, policy and practice. In its first three years of operations, the Water Institute received 33 funded grants and awards, ranging in value from 15,000 to 1.5million, to a total value of 4,405,920, from 28 different awarding bodies; produced 60 research papers and delivered three large international conferences. For FY2012-13 the Water Institute had approximately 1.5M expenditure of which around 900,000 was research. The Water Institute has 5 associated faculty, approximately 20 affiliated students, 5 Post-Doc researchers, 10 research staff, and approximately 7-8 temporary positions. The WI pursues around five thematic Focus Areas at any one time. They are cross-cutting subjects in WaSH-health-development in which there are identifiable ongoing problems, and in which the Water Institute can contribute to accelerating progress. Our Focus Areas reflect the ‘elephants in the room’ complex issues that are too readily ignored in favor of simpler and easier to answer questions. We aim to work with others to identify them, understand them, and find creative, added-value, ways forward. This is a professional position providing services to the Water Institute in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering. The individual in this position provides leadership, coordination, and management in one of several Water Institute Focus Areas, working across the WI core functions of: research, teaching and learning, networking and partnership development and knowledge management and under the general direction of the Directors of those core functions and the Director of the Water Institute.
