Dear reader,
In the 2nd week of February 2016, WASTE and its local partners are conducting a training programme for sanitation practicioners / experts in Busia, Kenya. As I would like to add to our expert team a reputed practical and very experienced person in African Ventilation Improved (Double) Pit Toilets to assist our technical training team, a Terms of Reference is outlined below. We expect it to be a two week assignment, i.e. one week in the field (Kenya) and one week home base. The tasks to be carried out under this assignment concern implementation of the FINISH INK Programme. Particularly the training material that has been developed in the FINISH INK programme needs to be tailored further to local conditions and practices and also to best practices from elsewhere. FINISH INK works on the principles of community based improved sanitation and hygiene, and enabling safe reuse of human excreta. The main goal of the expert training programme is to lower the cost of dry sanitation systems and have a final review on wet sanitation systems. In both cases taking into consideration future reuse of human excreta.
Description of tasks:
1. Review the material send by WASTE, particularly the designs and BoQs of the dry systems as outlined in the Learning Guide Part B (technical), review the Technical Movie and other available material.
2. Bring along best practices from dry sanitation systems as practiced elsewhere in Africa, in view of the reuse element, a preference is given to Ventilation Improved Double Pit or variation hereupon that allow for safe reuse of excreta.
3. Together with the expert team agree on the most suitable dry systems
4. Support construction of the recommended systems during a training course.
5. Together with the expert team work out BoQs for the different selected systems in sync with different site conditions (water table, soil conditions, space availability and number of users).
6. Recommend how to capture this in artisan / mason training curricula.
7. Prepare a draft training plan for incorporating those in consultation with the expert team.
3. The results
• Own overview of best practices in dry sanitation systems in Africa.
• Review of dry sanitation systems in the Learning Guide
• Finalised dry sanitation systems incorporated in the Learning Guide.
• Bill of Quantities and designs of the same
• About two systems constructed during course.
• Draft training plan.
• Estimate in cost reduction and guidelines and safe excreta reuse.
Please send an application with your CV and / or other proof of track record (emphasising experience in actual construction of VIDP systems, availability and expected fees to This email address is being protected from spambots.
