Dear Richard,

Thanks for these photos of the Burundian Minister of Agriculture and Livestock (what is her name?) to your coffee plantation in Burundi which is fertilised with urine from UDDTs (urine-diverting dry toilets).

You had attached a zip file with photos - I have now uploaded them to the SuSanA flickr account, to make them more easily accessible for all, see this album:

www.flickr.com/photos/gtzecosan/sets/72157644726382505/

Perhaps you could provide labels for each photo? They are really interesting and shows how much attention at the highest level your work is receiving in Burundi!

Some example photos (for more, click on the link above):

This must be you showing the Minister (the lady in the brown top) the UDDTs:

What is this, a rainwater storage tanks perhaps? (in Germany, nobody would let a minister stand so close to the edge of a tank that has no railings...! ;-) ):

I like this photo, it is so unlike how such a ministerial visit would be in Germany...

This must be you with your coffe harvest:

I am really glad that you are making use of the forum to tell us more about your work in Burundi, and that you are not afraid of the French-English language barrier either (keep on posting in French, it's no problem).

Regards,
Elisabeth

Re: Introducing Aprosan's work with urine-diverting dry toilets and reuse at coffee plantations in Burundi

fumier organique, etc.)

+++++++++

In English (Google Translate)

I send you this message to give you some information,
Richard is in the rural areas of the country where he has no access
internet

The cost of latrines we build is between 900 and 2300
USD . This cost varies depending on the construction materials used and
depending on the size of the latrines or the number of users.

We inform you that the price of seats and accessories is
high because until now we import by air, and
transportation cost is high; but if we could import a
large amount of material , it would be transported by boat . it
will result in significant reduction in the prices of these
latrines.

Our goal is to work with grassroots communities , we
do you necessary to have flexibility in pricing.

People must be made aware of the benefits that are
related to these latrines ( environmental protection , production
organic manure , etc.).

Re: Introducing Aprosan's work with urine-diverting dry toilets and reuse at coffee plantations in Burundi

Hi Richard.

Interesting work you are doing in Burundi. Could you please provide more details about the price of these latrines? You know this is one of the most important factors in Burundi given the limited financial capacities of households.

I am not sure if you know what GIZ is doing in the field of snaitation, so below a summary of our two main sanitation activities in case you are interested:

1. We are promoting very simple ecosan latrines in rural areas that cost around 5 euros each. The latrine consists of separating fecal matter and urine and collecting urine in small recipients to be used as organic fertilizers. Fecal matter is left for around 8 months before it is used as a fertilizer. This model was tested by Peter Morgan in other countries. The idea is to construct a latrine with local material, even the slap consists of mixing cow manure with sand and clay (old Burundian techniques). We have 3 pilot areas where we are measuring the agricultural yield with different crops, by comparing yield with chemical fertilizers, organic fertilizers, and no fertilizers. Will post results on the forum once this is ready.

2. We are working on behavior change with a Swiss research center, EAWAG, trying to introduce water treatment techniques and promoting the construction/improvement of latrines, and their use, in rural areas. Different types of latrines are promoted, and we are testing different intervention techniques in different areas by combining community activities, awareness campaigns, one to one visits, subsidies, and training local workers on the construction of latrines. We have been working on a concept for this activities since last April, interventions will start in one month and we planned 2 field surveys to measure the impact in July and December this year. Again once we have results I will share them with everyone.

Hope you find this info useful, and looking forward to meeting you in person in Burundi.

Nabil.

Aprosan's work with urine-diverting dry toilets and reuse at coffee plantations in Burundi - visit by Minister of Agriculture

Dear all,

This is a post written jointly by the moderator Elisabeth von Muench and Richard Kaderi from Aprosan. Its purpose is to introduce you to Aprosan's work with urine-diverting dry toilets (UDDTs) and reuse activities at coffee plantations in Burundi.

We welcome any follow-up questions you may have.

Chris Buckley wrote to Elisabeth a few days ago that "Richard champions the installation of UD toilets in Burundi and was recently in Durban purchasing more units. He uses the urine and faecal material for agriculture (organic coffee)."

Richard subsequently wrote about his work in an e-mail to Elisabeth:

++++++++++++++++++++++++
Hi everyone,

Chris, thanks for the introduction and I really appreciate for your time yesterday and special thanks as well to your team they were very enthusiastic and helpful .

I have not dealt with any NGO yet except a Holland one (ZOA) which I started talking to them a month ago and because the community knew these latrines from where I have installed them. They approached me to build two blocks, one at a local market and another one at a school and I started the building a week ago.

But because our Country president is a farmer and has been to my plantation and seen them also at my coffee washing station where I mix pulp, urine and faecal matter as fertilizer he gave me work to build around 80 at the soccer stadium and this is a year ago.

Last may, I was also awarded by the country for introducing these latrines in the country. I have built some as well at the army academy.

Here you see some photos:

Myself with His Excellency Mr. President of the Republic
of Burundi for the submission of environmental latrine Kavugangoma plant Mwakiro (our president is the one in the gumboots!):

Myself (Mr Richard KADERI) with the Minister of National Defence in full demonstration of environmental latrines:

On 1 May 2013 I received the Certificate of Merit by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Burundi, in recognition of performances in the construction of environmental latrines:

Please find more photos and information about my work in Burundi in the attached documents (in French).

If you also do work in Burundi or if you have experiences with using urine as a fertiliser in coffee plantations, I would love to hear from you!

Regards,
Richard

Richard Kaderi

P.S. Note by Elisabeth: wow, I am really impressed! I didn't know this work was going on in Burundi. Thanks, Chris Buckley, for making the introductions. And Burundi's presidents seems like a cool guy (I must read up more about him - showing my ignorance here about the political situation in Burundi - , but a president who is interested in sanitation and reuse (ecosan) sounds good to me).
