Re: Symposium on UV disinfection in developing countries (organized by UNESCO-IHE and IUVA) - 6 Nov. 2014, Delft, The Netherlands

Thanks Arno. This UV disinfection symposium is a separate event from Sol-Char Reinvent the Toilet project. The disinfection symposium at UNESCO IHE Delft is going to focus on the role of UV in disinfection. I hope people on this forum can spread the word on the UV symposium - the first one focusing on applications of this technology specifically to developing countries.

The final programme is here: www.unesco-ihe.org/sites/default/files/uv_brochure.pdf

We have studied UV applications for Sol-Char but the primary benefit is due to solar heating and not germicidal UV for disinfection of surfaces or water/wastewater/septage. We do have a preliminary design for a thin film septage water disinfection with UV but this may be less efficient than solar heating.

Thanks Karl for the info on the upcoming symposium on UV disinfection to be held in Delft next month.

What is the link between this symposium and the Sol Char project?

I have seen a standard method used in China to treat latrine sludge taken from public toilets and that is small piles left to dry in the sun prior to reuse in agriculture.
