Re: Skat Foundation is hiring again: Part-time co-moderator of the SuSanA Discussion Forum (deadline: 26 May 2020) - outcome

We have selected a new co-moderator from the pool of 14 applicants. She will introduce herself soon in this thread:  forum.susana.org/10-announcements-regard...-co-moderators#29996
(I have sent personal rejection e-mails to the unsuccessful candidates; in case you didn't get a rejection e-mail do let me know)

There were several other applicants who came close to making the cut - unfortunately, we could only pick one person.
My "life-hack" tip today: if you think being a part-time co-moderator of this discussion forum would appeal to you in the future then do make sure you post here on the forum regularly, so that you already get onto our radar. We would make it a selection criterion again next time that anyone who wants to be considered as a co-moderator has to have been a participant on this forum before, evidenced by making some posts.

All the best,
Elisabeth
(together with Franziska Volk from the SuSanA secretariat)

Re: Skat Foundation is hiring again: Part-time co-moderator of the SuSanA Discussion Forum (deadline: 26 May 2020) - outcome

The deadline for this position has now passed and the job opening is closed. We received 14 applications - thank you. This is a lot less than last time when we had 90 applications but that's OK. We also made the requirements much tighter and specific. It turns out they were not easy to meet!
If you were one of the applicants, you will receive a decision on your application within a week or so.
Stay tuned to meet a new co-moderator hopefully very soon.

Regards,
Elisabeth

Re: Skat Foundation is hiring again: Part-time co-moderator of the SuSanA Discussion Forum (deadline: 26 May 2020) - outcome

The deadline for applying for the part-time co-moderator consultancy/internship is coming up in just four days. We still don't have a clear front runner, so please put your applications in if you meet the criteria!

If you have any questions about this position, just ask here in this thread or send me an e-mail.
I know the requirements are very specific but there should be some SuSanA members out there who would fit this job description perfectly!?

Just repeating the main requirements for the position (which is for 1-2 days per week, working from home):

Main requirements (compulsory):
  1. Experience with moderating an online discussion forum, or bringing people together in a virtual space, having encouraged people to share information online.
  2. Strong working ties to at least one, but preferably more, organisations in the WASH sector in your country or region (this could be a university, NGO, government department, private sector etc.); Note: early career researchers and professionals as well as postgraduate students are encouraged to apply.
  3. Applicant must have spent his or her formative years in a developing country / low and middle income country (LMIC) but not as a child of an expat family from the Global North. We are looking for someone who really knows the realities on the ground of a developing country.  (applicants from India are unfortunately not encouraged to apply because we already have one co-moderator from India)
  4. Prior engagement with the SuSanA community, as evidenced by your posts on the SuSanA Discussion Forum or a closely related forum or Dgroup (e.g. RWSN, HIFA)
  5. You have to have a workspace with very good internet access.
  6. Very good written command of the English language.
If you enjoy posting on the forum and interacting with other people abotu WASH topics then this could be your opportunity to turn this into a paid activity!

Re: Skat Foundation is hiring again: Part-time co-moderator of the SuSanA Discussion Forum (deadline: 26 May 2020) - outcome

I thought I should mention that it's also possible to set this position up as a part-time, remote internship with Skat Foundation - rather than a consultancy contract. This might suit some applicants better, for example if you are currently enrolled in a postgraduate degree course. It will look good on your CV later. The payment is the same, and you have to pay the necessary income taxes and alike at your end. You can mention in the comments field of the application survey if you'd prefer an internship arrangement over a consultancy contract.

We have so far received 5 applications. Don't hesitate to apply if you think you have what it takes (read the requirements carefully)!

One key requirement that seems to be surprisingly hard to meet, from what I can see so far, is this one:

4. Prior engagement with the SuSanA community, as evidenced by your posts on the SuSanA Discussion Forum or a closely related forum or Dgroup (e.g. RWSN, HIFA)

Another bonus requirement, which might set you apart from other applicants is this one:

8. Prior experience with Wikipedia editing and an aptitude for editing Wikipedia articles on WASH topics in a collaborative environment.

Elisabeth

Re: Skat Foundation is hiring again: Part-time co-moderator of the SuSanA Discussion Forum (deadline: 26 May 2020) - outcome

I should perhaps clarify one of the requirements:

3. Applicant must have spent his or her formative years in a developing country / low and middle income country (LMIC) but not as a child of an expat family from the Global North. We are looking for someone who really knows the realities on the ground of a developing country.

We have this requirement because we want to see more diversity on this forum and more South to South knowledge exchange. We hope this could be facilitated if we had another co-moderator who spent his/her formative years in the Global South and still lives there now. We are looking for a diversity of regions as well. For this reason, applicants from India are unfortunately not encouraged to apply because we already have one co-moderator from India (Paresh). I am sorry about that (if you're from India and were planning to apply; you can always register your interest for future positions though).

Skat Foundation is hiring again: Part-time co-moderator of the SuSanA Discussion Forum (deadline: 26 May 2020) - outcome

Dear all,

This is a follow-up to the call for applications that we had placed last December here . We are now again advertising for a part-time co-moderator of the SuSanA Discussion Forum. If your application is successful you will receive a 3-month contract (containing about 1-2 days per week) which could be extended until the end of this year if performance is good.

The position is funded through the cooperation system between SuSanA, the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) and the Rural Water Supply Network (RWSN) at Skat Foundation which started in November 2019 (follow  this thread  for more updates).

The objectives of this project are to :
  1. Establish, operate and steer a functioning, diverse “Forum Practice group”, consisting of trained and active moderators
  2. Harmonise online sanitation communities in the WASH sector (by creating mutual understanding through exchange, building upon each one’s experience and the creation of collaborative content)
  3. Ensure sustainability of the SuSanA Discussion Forum and its active moderation
Your tasks as a moderator can be found in the "Moderator guide for the Forum"  here . You would work in a team together with the other moderators of the forum.*

If you are interested in applying for this position, and you meet the requirements below, please fill out this form (short answers are OK):
Link to application form

Please also send us your CV (send it to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) but you do not need to send a cover letter.
This application form will be open until 26 May 2020. Applicants will be informed about 1-2 weeks later.

  4. Prior engagement with the SuSanA community, as evidenced by your posts on the SuSanA Discussion Forum or a closely related forum or Dgroup (e.g. RWSN, HIFA)
  5. You have to have a workspace with very good internet access.
  6. Very good written command of the English language.

Secondary requirements (not compulsory but advantageous):
  1. Several years of work experience in the WASH sector or a closely related sector.
  2. Strong and growing network with other WASH professionals or practitioners (online but also face-to-face, for example within WASH coordination meetings).
  3. Prior experience with knowledge management activities.
  4. Outgoing personality, willing to “put your personality out there” and be approachable and authentic. Not easily offended.
  5. Able to (in principle) work at any time of the week (even though we fully respect a good work-life balance). Sometimes a post on the forum requires an urgent response.
  6. Good written command of another language, other than English.
  7. A network with WASH practitioners who use a language other than English.
  8. Prior experience with Wikipedia editing and an aptitude for editing Wikipedia articles on WASH topics in a collaborative environment.
What can we offer you?
  1. An interesting, varied job that you would carry out remotely, within a supportive team environment (the Forum Practice Group) which meets up via video calls.
  2. Training in SuSanA discussion forum moderation (using video links or alike).
  3. Opportunities to grow your network in the WASH sector.
  4. Opportunities to learn more about a range of topics in the WASH sector.
  5. A competitive hourly rate based on your experience level, within the context of your country of residence.
  6. An opportunity to become better known and to increase your visibility for potential future employers
  7. A job/consultancy which does not require any travelling but can be carried out from home
We look forward to hearing from you. If you have any questions, please put them into this thread or e-mail the SuSanA secretariat (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
