Impact Argument from this study: The SuSanA India Chapter serves as a platform for exchange and knowledge management in India. It reaches out to a community of more than 8,000 international and 2,000 Indian sanitation practitioners. ISC is a key partner of the SuSanA India Chapter and has used outputs of the Chapter for advocacy efforts with industry and the Government of India. Particularly, the SuSanA India Chapter has pushed for enlarging the focus of the Swachh Bharat Mission from mere hardware to software issues like behavioural change.

The fifth impact story is about WASH in Schools in the Pan-European Region

Impact Argument from this study: Two publications on WASH in schools (WinS) in the pan-European region have been produced by the WHO Regional Office for Europe (WHO/EURO) and the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The publications were supported by the Expert Group on advancing WASH in schools, established under the programme of work of the Protocol on Water and Health. Through the expert group, SuSanA contributed to the production and the development of the publications. The publications represent a first-time effort to collect the available evidence from the region. They aim at raising the profile of WASH in schools among parties to the Protocol on Water and Health and, more broadly, among the 53 Member states of the region.

This week’s impact story is about Mainstreaming UDDTs as a sanitation solution in Moldova

Impact Argument from this study: SuSanA played a key role in fostering the discourse on UDDTs/Ecosan, making the new technology more acceptable due to good examples from other countries and also provided inspiration for the drafting of the national technical standards for the construction and operation of Ecosan Toilets in the Republic of Moldova.

here comes the third case study.
This week’s impact story is about City Sanitation Plans and Septage Management in India

Impact Argument from this study: SuSanA serves as host of the SFD Promotion Initiative. Constituting a neutral, international platform was an essential prerequisite to receive funding for the project. Moreover, as an international network of partners, SuSanA facilitates the acceptance of SFDs as a working tool in India and beyond. As part of the SFD project consortium the CSE Water Programme created SFDs of 11 cities with the aim to strengthen advocacy for improved urban sanitation programming. The presentation of this work at the National Sanitation Workshop resulted in the MoUD (Ministry of Urban Development) national flagship programme Swacch Bharat Mission to support 29 flagship cities. These included the 11 cities that SFDs were developed for and 12 cities of the CSE Ganga project launched in 2016.

it is time for the second case study.
This week’s impact story is about Up-Scaling Basic Sanitation for the Urban Poor in Kenya (UBSUP)

Impact Argument from this study: Implementing the sanitation project “Up-Scaling Basic Sanitation for the Urban Poor – UBSUP”, The Water Sector Trust Fund (WSTF) has actively used the SuSanA Forum to get input on the construction of Decentralised Treatment Facilities (DTFs) and capacity building as well as concept development along the sanitation chain. Given its success, UBSUP, in turn, became a programme of reference during the review of Kenya’s National Environmental Sanitation and Hygiene Policy from 2007 that led to an improved version in 2016, including an implementation strategy by the Ministry of Health. Moreover, by extensively sharing information on the status of UBSUP as well as lessons learned from the project on the SuSanA platform, SuSanA facilitated the replication of similar initiatives globally and thus contributed to up-scaling sanitation in Kenya and beyond.

Hi Everyone,

We are happy to launch a series of new SuSanA case studies today. In this series of case studies we tried to answer the question "How does SuSanA generate impact?". Selected sanitation projects from different parts of the world were requested to report on how SuSanA had influenced the work carried out. This resulted in a variety of evidence indicating that SuSanA can have a far-reaching effect providing expertise, convenor of meetings, a source of online information, networked contacts, discussion platform and a place to disseminate reports and publications.

It is not easy to measure something that is in many aspects more qualitative than quantitative, especially when it comes to knowledge management and networking. We can measure click rates and downloads, meeting participation and Forum posts..., but the really interesting thing to measure would be what people do with all this. Did the document really fill the needed information gap, did they meet and connect with the right persons at meetings or in the Forum with whom they have a fruitful exchange and maybe start collaborations (that eventually lead to tangible impact)?
In this Forum thread on SuSanA's ability to demonstrate impact: Has SuSanA been able to demonstrate impact on sanitation? , I agree with Elisabeth, that, whatever the impact may be - SuSanA only plays a role in a whole chain of actions that ultimately lead to impact.

So whilst we as SuSanA are unable to prove the "end result" (better sanitation services at scale) we might be able to monitor and prove results along the intermediate steps, like "number of documents downloaded from the SuSanA library" as one possible indicator.

Hence, I think we can answer the yes/no question in the affirmative and demonstrate that SuSanA did play a role (i.e. as knowledge broker, platform that connects people, spreads ideas..) not only quantitatively (through member registrations, clickrates, Forum posts, downloads, Social Media reach, webinar and meeting registrations...), but also qualitatively. With the series of these new case studies we would like to give you a glimpse on the how.

The first case story is about Sanitation Technologies in Emergencies

Impact Argument from this study: The systems approach promoted by SuSanA finds entrance into German policies through the Compendium of Sanitation Technologies in Emergencies developed by the German WASH Network and Eawag together with the Global WASH Cluster, SuSanA and other key actors in the sanitation sector. SuSanA has served as a valuable sounding board since the early stages of the publication.
