Funded PhD opportunity - Using molecular ecology to link human infectious diseases with environmental risk factors in Fijian watersheds

Summary. This applied PhD research aims to use DNA analysis techniques to explore the
molecular ecology of select faecal-oral infectious diseases within Fijian watersheds. The research will involve fieldwork in Fiji and is part of a larger project called Watershed Interventions for Systems Health in the Pacific (WISH– Pacific)
 
Research areas: sanitation, microbiology, environmental science and engineering, global public health
 
Background. Rural Fijian communities experience regular outbreaks of infectious diseases
including typhoid fever. Inadequate drinking water quality, poor hand hygiene and leaking toilet systems are all potential risk factors for infection. However, more research is needed to understand the links between infections and specific environmental and behavioural risk factors within watersheds,
especially given climate change impacts.
As this PhD is part of the larger WISH–Pacific, it involves working in cross-discipline teams and closely
with colleagues at Fiji National University. The research is funded by the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) Partnerships for a Healthy Region initiative.
 
Candidate profile.
 
·       A bachelor's degree in engineering or science
·       A relevant master's degree is preferred but not essential
·       Demonstrated interest in the topic area and skills in molecular laboratory methods are desirable
·       The ability and willingness to undertake fieldwork in Fiji is essential
 
Eligibility. Candidates will be assessed based on the University of Sydney PhD entry requirements and suitability for the research topic. Both domestic (Australian) and international students are eligible to apply.
 
Financial Support.
 
·       The PhD student will receive an annual stipend of $AU41 753 (3.5 years)
·       Tuition fees will be covered for international students were required
·       Funds are also available for fieldwork travel, meetings, and approved conferences as part of the WISH – Pacific project
 
Research group. The supervisory team consists of academics within the School of Civil Engineering with active research in water, wastewater and/or humanitarian engineering. The PhD student will also work closely with researchers from the School of Public Health, as well as research colleagues at
Fiji National University.
 
Methods. The PhD is based at the University of Sydney and will involve fieldwork visits to Fiji. The research methods will include designing
sampling plans and lab testing, along with analysis of existing data.
