  • Sanitation is dignity and life. Living and working 15 years in a Beira (Mozambique) a city where Cholera is endemic the importance of sanitation became evident, furthermore it was clear that sanitation is so much more than an infrastructure

Dear all
I am happy to inform you that Sweden has made it possible to certify safe and sanitized blackwater , urine and human waste from latrines and for further use as a recognized fertilizer.
The criteria for the certification has been developed by the Swedish Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Engineering.
This is a very positive development and will hopefully pave the way for farmers to use human waste for agricultural production . In addition this is also an incentive to spur development of sanitation technologies where it possible to get safe products that easily can be certified.
The Federation of Swedish Farmers have been active in this development and we will keep you posted on this development , there is more to come.
For you who knows Swedish here is further information .

Madeleine, these are great news indeed. Thanks for sharing them with us!

Let's hope we can use similar criteria to adopt this certification in the rest of the EU. For those of us who can't read Swedish, it would be very interesting to know what kind of arguments were used vs. the conventional liquid (animal) manure.

Dear Madeleine,
I am also wondering if you can tell us more about these criteria? You wrote:

Are they listed in the short pdf file that you linked to? If yes, where? - We could try to use Google Translate to translate from Swedish to English.

Elisabeth

Dear Madeleine,

wow, that are great news for all of us.
Maybe by this we get also the allowance for other EU countries!

Does it mean, any urine or sanitized blackwater (when treated/stored under certain conditions) can be used in agriculture or has each "producer" apply for the certificate of his/her product? The second option would make it much harder.

Does an English version of the pdf exist? I can read it roughly, but for the details an Engish translation would be great.

All the best - and yes, please keep us informed,
Martina.
