Re: SuSanA Knowledge Session: Circular Economy in Sanitation with Girija Ramakrishna

Dear Prof. Seshadri,

Thank you very much for your message and for your continued engagement with the SuSanA Knowledge Sessions.
Please find below a brief summary of the key takeaways from the session held on 26 November 2025 with Ms. Girija Ramakrishna, focusing on circular economy applications in sanitation:

Key points from the Session

1. Strengthening nutrient loops through practical reuse pathways
Doc Girija highlighted real-world cases where faecal-sludge-based soil amendments have improved soil structure, crop yields, and water retention particularly in decentralized rural and peri-urban systems.
2. Treated wastewater as a circular resource
The session emphasized how properly treated wastewater can support irrigation, groundwater recharge, and landscaping when supported by clear guidelines and risk-management protocols.
3. Simple, scalable solutions for resource recovery
Participants discussed low-complexity processing technologies (e.g., co-composting, drying beds, decentralized treatment units) that can be adopted by local governments and small operators without heavy capital investment.
4. Enabling conditions for circular sanitation
She underscored the importance of regulatory clarity, fit-for-purpose standards, and capacity building among service providers to ensure safe and sustained resource recovery.
5. Community and market acceptance
The session also touched on behaviour change, trust-building, and transparent communication as essential components for uptake of resource-recovered products.
A more detailed summary along with session highlights will be shared shortly once compiled.

Thank you once again for your interest, and we welcome additional reflections from members who wish to contribute to this important discussion.

Kind regards,

Benny Filumba
