RECORDING NOW ON-LINE
Webinar 10: Community initiatives for sanitation and health (took place on January 28th, 2016)
This was our webinar number 10. See all previous SuSanA-SEI webinars* with BMGF grantees and others in this YouTube Playlist in the SuSanA Youtube channel:
www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0gMdVBup...ymOPomtqL_XYT5YtLTSK
About the webinar content:
Improving access to sanitation and hygiene and changing behaviours can bring not only health benefits but also many other positive changes in a community, including social, economic and environmental gains. Deepening our understanding of the linkages between sanitation interventions and health outcomes provides key insight and evidence for decision-makers making investments in sanitation services. The experts and participants in this webinar discussed how these critical connections at a community level can be improved.
The webinar brought together two speakers who presented their approaches in the area of “Community initiatives for sanitation and health” and about 35 participants who interacted and asked questions by using the chat function:
Recording of the presentation by Juliet Waterkeyn (Africa Ahead in Zimbabwe and Rwanda) – speaking about community hygiene and health clubs for improving family health at scale:
Recording of the presentation by Mohammad Monirul Hasan (ZEF, University of Bonn, Germany) – speaking about the agriculture water, sanitation and hygiene (AG-WATSAN) nexus and improved health in Bangladesh:
Recording of the closing Discussion:
We will put questions that came up for the two speakers in the two existing forum threads where their work has been introduced in the past, i.e. see
Regards,
Arno, Elisabeth and Sarah
* Webinars 8 and 9 were organised under the Knowledge Management initiative (www.bdskm.net/) of the Building Demand for Sanitation (BDS) program of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. These webinars were moderated and supported by Euforic Services and hosted by Stockholm Environment Institute and the SuSanA secretariat.

Re: Linking sanitation and health – WEBINAR Thursday 28 January (rescheduled)
Dear colleagues,
We have re-scheduled the webinar on ‘Linking community initiatives for sanitation and health’ to January 28 2016 at 10:00 (UTC/GMT). We hope that you can join us for the new date.
Overview:
Poor sanitation has serious implications for health including a large burden of diarrhea, which remains the second leading killer of children under 5 globally, and a large burden of intestinal worms.
We invite you to join an interactive webinar where experts will discuss their work in identifying these critical connections at a community level.
The webinar will bring together an excellent panel with two speakers who will present their work (please note a change in presenters for the re-scheduled date):
Juliet Waterkeyn – Africa Ahead, speaking about community hygiene and health clubs for improving family health at scale
Mohammad Monirul Hasan - ZEF, University of Bonn speaking about the agriculture water, sanitation and hygiene (AG-WATSAN) nexus and improved health in Bangladesh
The webinar will include two 15 minute presentations from the speakers and half an hour time for questions and discussion with webinar participants. The webinar is being hosted by Stockholm Environment Institute and the SuSanA secretariat as part of a grant to SEI funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation who is also funding part of the work of the three presenters.

Re: Linking sanitation and health – WEBINAR on Thursday 26 November 2015
Dear all,
Thank you for your interest in the SuSanA webinar on making the link between sanitation and health. Unfortunately one of our presenters has received news of a family emergency and we will be postponing the webinar to allow for their participation at a later date. If you already registered on EventBrite, you can remain registered for the event and you will receive an update to confirm a new date, which will likely be mid-January.
We apologize for any inconvenience and hope you can join us in the future.
Best regards,
Sarah

Re: Does mobilizing communities to change behaviours improve health? Pre-webinar discussion
In light of the webinar next week that will look at ‘making the link’ between sanitation and health at a community level, I created this post to start some discussion before and after the online event. (See the event announcement above).
The topic concerns an important issue - what kind of evidence do we have on the links between sanitation and health outcomes, and is it good enough. With yesterday’s World Toilet Day events highlighting the importance of sanitation for nutrition, this is clearly a growing area of interest (see Jona’s message posted yesterday). These questions build on a previous discussion on the forum about the ‘elusive effect of water and sanitation on the global burden of disease.’ forum.susana.org/forum/categories/26-hea...al-burden-of-disease .
Good evidence is needed to design appropriate strategies. With so many sanitation initiatives focusing on mobilizing communities to change behaviours, how can we show this is an effective approach to achieve the health gains that are often discussed. Is there better evidence for some health threats, such as diarrheal disease or undernutrition, but less in other areas that have been overlooked?
I think one challenge is the complexity of pathways leading from interventions in sanitation to better health. We need to get better at looking at these interactions, and sometimes new approaches may be required to provide the evidence needed. The webinar will feature presenters who will discuss findings from their work in Rwanda, Ghana, and India and hopefully this will bring up further avenues of debate for sharing experiences and knowledge on the forum.
To continue this discussion I have started with the following questions:
Where are the key gaps in sanitation and health linkages? Are they with particular health problems, or among particular groups of people, or with demonstrating a holistic picture?
What further questions do you believe need to be answered to strengthen evidence of sanitation and health linkages at a community level?
