New video tutorials on how to use the SuSanA discussion forum

Dear forum users,

In order to facilitate the use of the forum, especially for new users, Elisabeth, Arno and I decided to create some simple video tutorials on how to use this discussion forum.
These will be accessible from the forum front door page (here: forum.susana.org/ ) in a prominent spot at the top of the page as soon as Steffen has embedded the link in the next few days.

I want to forward you these links today since you might be interested in having a look at them, even if you are already an experienced user - and since you might like to give feedback on how to improve them further. It is a series of 5 short video clips covering the following topics:

Video 1: Registration

Content of this video:
In order to contribute to the discussions and get e-mail alerts you need to register with the SuSanA network. In this video, you will learn:
- how to get to the registration form
- what you need to fill in in order to register
- how to select the time intervals you want to receive forum digests via e-mail

Video 2: Introduction to the forum (overview, how to navigate around, explanations about front door)

Content of this video:
- how to get to the forum page
- the difference between the forum front page (set up particularly for newcomers) and the main forum page
- how to login with your user name and password
- how the forum posts are grouped into seven thematic categories
- how to find the sub-categories which contain the different topics/threads
- how to search the forum keyword seraches
- where to find the help section

Video 3: Replying to a post

Content of this video:

- how to find the forum rules (please read them if you are new to the forum)
- finding a certain post
- opening or downloading a document that is attached to a post
- writing a reply
- using formatting options (bold, underline, color)
- inserting emoticons
- inserting a link to another website
- use of the "subscribe"-button
- use of the "like"-button and increasing someones's karma points
- use of the "favorite"-button for a thread
- editing the post afterwards

Video 4: Creating a new thread and inserting photos or files

Content of this video:
- hint to the forum rules
- posting a new topic and chosing a sub-category
- embedding a picture into the post
- embedding a video into the post
- attach a pdf file
- making a back-up copy of your post in case of bad internet connection
- hint to the mobile version of the forum site
- hint to the help section where questions can be posted

Video 5: Profile information and interaction with other users

Content of this video:
- how to get to your own profile page and which information you find there
- how to edit your personal information in order to make your profile more interesting for other users (you don't have to reveal more than you want to)
- how to upload a picture
- how to find other users
- what you can find out about other users by looking at their profile
- how to indicate that you like their posts by clicking the "like" button or giving "karma points"
- how to send private messages to another user
- what the statistics tell you about the forum users
- where to find the help section

If you have any suggestions, please feel free to comment on the videos. Also, if there are topics for additional tutorial videos that you find important, please let me know.

The link for the entire playlist on Youtube is this one:

By the way, for the creation of the videos I used the software Camtasia (free trial version for one month) but I had to re-record my voice because of the low microphone quality. Otherwise, I found this software quite easy to use. But I have to say that I have worked with video editing software before; someone else might find it more difficult if you have never used video editing software before.
You are welcome to ask further questions that you might have.

Best regards,
milli

Re: New video tutorials on how to use the SuSanA discussion forum

Dear all,

I would like to draw your attention to the video tutorials that Milli posted in this thread on Monday. I think she put together really nice demos of the main features of the forum!

Now we would really like to hear from you if you have any suggestions for improvements or modifications or any general impressions (I apologise to those who don't have access to Youtube in their countries).

By watching these videos you might even discover new features that you didn't know how to use yet!

I would be very happy to hear from you, especially from people who are new to this forum as these tutorials were made particularly for newcomers.

I will also post them in the forum help section .

Regards,
Elisabeth

Re: New video tutorials on how to use the SuSanA discussion forum

Milli has now completed the recording of the missing two videos, so now we have the complete set of five videos in this Youtube Playlist:

www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0gMdVBup...s5PV4wPW6h7lfWdA_z93

I think they turned out very nicely - great work, Milli!

For people who are already quite experienced, I can in particular recommend Video 4 and 5 to you. They explain e.g. how to insert photos, how to format your post, edit your profile information and interactions with other users:

For those who don't have access to Youtube (e.g. in Pakistan and China), we also have the files as dropbox links for you here:

Video 2:

Video 5:

If you find the videos really wonderful, like I do, but are not keen to write a reply, just click on the "I like this post" button below this post (you have to be logged in), then at least we know that they are being appreciated. :-)

Regards,
Elisabeth
