Susana's cMOOC,
to my surprise this topic got a lot of traffic by viewers, but less content contributions by the different sections of members and users. Nevertheless, still I belief there is a big interest out there about know how to do sustainable sanitation business. In absence of any answers to my questions about the same issue to the team of 17. SUSANA Meeting,

I propose to the "road map" establishing Susana's own cMOOC by support of members and users.

To have a "permanent" and solid base for this start-up, I suggest to ask UNESCO-IHE to use without any payments UNESCO-IHE's existing ECOSAN online-course as SUSANA's cMOOC-basis, formally established/designed by MS EvMunich. Furthermore to ask UNESCO-IHE to second to Susana the existing ECOSAN-course leader on a longer term, already employed by UNESCO-IHE and to continue to pay for.

Additional the UNPAID online lectors (home base via Internet) should have hands-on experiences (not only have managerial background) and should come at least to 50% from Africa, Asia and America, at least with a strong African-, Asian- and American-background if now based in Europe or USA, in order to balance the Europe based setup of SUSANA.

The content should be very hands-on and with less exchange on latest academic stuff or latest buss-words bla-bla (so called latest developments).

As a possible side effect the collective establishment of a first SUSANA-cMOOC might create people connectivity to the SUSANA-organization and between former strangers, as more people get involved and their own contributions get visibly included in the cMOOC. By the way, this is all about the cMOOC, it is only growing by free contributions and exchange...

Thank you Cecile for your input, and yes here on the forum is the most transparent way of providing your input into this process.

To answer Detlef's question, the secretariat is hoping to receive input and feedback through the forum on the draft roadmap, as that is the most transparent channel for communication within the community. As we (secretariat) would like as much feedback and input as possible, we are also accepting contributions via email.

With respect to the incorporation of feedback and input, the secretariat is responsible for capturing all the contributions and trying to incorporate them into the roadmap together with the SuSanA core group there to advise and discuss feedback and input received.

That said, here on the forum is the place to discuss what is missing or what should not be in the roadmap with the whole community and I would encourage everyone to engage.

If you have further questions, please ask them and I will try my best to answer them.

I think this is the place where to make comments about the roadmap ! So I will start with the first comment...

I would like to add that currently in the sanitation world, there is quite a lot of talk about "sanitation governance" as, amongst others, one of the key issues for the sustainability of sanitation systems.
This is a cross cutting issue and when we read the sustainability criteria of SuSanA in the roadmap we can see that the main issues linked to governance such as : financing, proper institutions (management), Operations and maintenance are well taken in account. However, I believe the notion of "governance" could be introduced somehow in the debate as a way to emphasize the importance of this issue to ensure sustainability and scaling up. It would be useful also as a tool to link together sanitation funding and sanitation management.
I am not sure how it could be introduced in the roadmap, but I think it could be useful to mention "governance".

During the World Water Week we also organized a stakeholder meeting to present the Roadmap and several donors showed a great interest in our platform. SuSanA joint roadmap 2014 to 2018 - towards more sustainable sanitation systems
Version 1.0 (draft) (August 2013)

Background

The Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA) joint roadmap 2014 to 2018 has been drafted to organise the platform to respond more effectively to the challenges of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and discussions on post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

The SuSanA strategy process was initiated following a plenary meeting at the Stockholm World Water Week 2012. On the initiative of the secretariat, a core group and key stakeholder meeting was convened in April 2013. The platform’s historical development, status quo, mode of operations, changing frame conditions were analysed and its potential assessed. Based on these results, elements for a draft joint roadmap were elaborated on by a core group think tank in June 2013.

SuSanA Vision

The SuSanA vision document, “Towards more sustainable sanitation solutions” (v1.2/2008), is the common basis that all members of the alliance agree on and work towards in their respective activities towards achieving sustainable sanitation solutions. The definition of sustainable sanitation along the five SuSanA sustainability criteria together with the “Bellagio Principles for Sustainable Sanitation” is still valid.

The SuSanA is an established international alliance unifying a wide range of members working along the same lines. SuSanA is open to others who want to join and be active in understanding and promoting sustainable sanitation systems. SuSanA invites all stakeholders of the sanitation sector to join the alliance to exchange and to contribute ideas, and to become active members.

The five SuSanA sustainability criteria
The main objective of a sanitation system is to protect and promote human health by providing a clean environment and breaking the cycle of disease. In order to be sustainable a sanitation system has to (1) promote health and hygiene effectively, (2) be financially and economically viable, (3) socially acceptable and institutionally appropriate, (4) technically appropriate including O&M, and (5) protect the environment and natural resources. See box 1 for full definitions.

[td](1) Health and hygiene: includes the risk of exposure to pathogens and hazardous substances that could affect public health at all points of the sanitation system from the toilet via the collection and treatment system to the point of reuse or disposal and downstream populations. This topic also covers aspects such as hygiene, nutrition and improvement of livelihood achieved by the application of a certain sanitation system, as well as downstream effects.

[td](2) Environment and natural resources: involves the required energy, water and other natural resources for construction, operation and maintenance of the system, as well as the potential emissions to the environment resulting from use. It also includes the degree of recycling and reuse practiced and the effects of these (e.g. reusing wastewater; returning nutrients and organic material to agriculture), and the protecting of other non-renewable resources, for example through the production of renewable energies (e.g. biogas).

[td](3) Technology and operation: incorporates the functionality and the ease with which the entire system including the collection, transport, treatment and reuse and/or final disposal can be constructed, operated and monitored by the local community and/or the technical teams of the local utilities. Furthermore, the robustness of the system, its vulnerability towards power cuts, water shortages, floods, etc. and the flexibility and adaptability of its technical elements to the existing infrastructure and to demographic and socio-economic developments are important aspects to be evaluated.

[td](4) Financial and economic issues: relate to the capacity of households and communities to pay for sanitation, including the construction, operation, maintenance and necessary reinvestments in the system. Besides the evaluation of these direct costs also direct benefits e.g. from recycled products (soil conditioner, fertiliser, energy and reclaimed water) and external costs and benefits have to be taken into account. Such external costs are e.g. environmental pollution and health hazards, while benefits include increased agricultural productivity and subsistence economy, employment creation, improved health and reduced environmental risks.

Mission
The SuSanA mission statement has been developed on the open SuSanA discussion forum, since late 2012, and reads:
“SuSanA is an open international alliance with members who are dedicated to understanding viable and sustainable sanitation solutions. It links on the ground experiences with an engaged community made up of practitioners, policy makers, researchers, and academia from different levels with the aim of promoting innovation and best practices in policy, programming and implementation.”

Goal and objectives of the Alliance

The overall goal of the SuSanA is to contribute to the achievement of current and future international development goals (MDGs, post-2015 MDGs, SDGs) by promoting a systems approach to sanitation provision taking in consideration all aspects of sustainability.

This goal is pursued through the following key engagement areas:
  • Awareness creation on sustainable sanitation
  • Generation of adequate momentum on sustainable sanitation at the highest political levels (information for decision makers) for promotion of sufficient allocation of resources.
  • Knowledge provision for planning, designing and implementation of sustainable sanitation systems (innovation, best practices).
  • Identification and communication on up-scaling examples for sustainable sanitation solutions (e.g. on financing instruments and mechanisms, bankable projects)
  • Development of global, regional and national visions of sustainable approaches with outreach to and in synergy with other sectors (e.g. Energy-Agriculture-Water Nexus).

How shall SuSanA address these key engagement areas?


SuSanA shall realise its objectives by pursuing the following roles (as revisited in June 2013):
  • Coordination and discussion platform – to connect and bring together actors from the sanitation sector to communicate and debate in an impartial environment on issues related to sanitation.
  • Knowledge exchange and learning platform (new) – to promote knowledge exchange and learning amongst members, with knowledge resource on as well as linked to the SuSanA platform (SuSanA library, conference materials, capacity building tools, drawings etc.) and produce case studies on projects around the world.
  • Sounding board – to offer a platform for members to receive input and review of their publications from the SuSanA community.
  • Contribute to Policy Dialogue – to support members involved in policy dialogue at national and international levels through inputs generated from working groups.
  • Promotion (new) – to promote the vision of SuSanA and the implementation of sustainable sanitation systems on the ground.
  • Working platform – to create an enabling working environment for members to contribute to SuSanA through tasks forces and working groups.

Strategic topics and opportunity areas - what we are working on

The following overarching strategic topics were identified as relevant topics of engagement along which SuSanA should orient its activities in the next 5 years:
  1. a. SDG/Post-2015 process – The on-going Sustainable Development Goals discussion to ensure Sanitation is positioned significantly (sustainabledevelopment.un.org/index.php?menu=1300)
  2. b. Nexus (Water – Energy – food security) – To explore the opportunities in the nexus security approach (www.water-energy-food.org/documents/understanding_the_nexus.pdf)
  3. c. Functional Sanitation Ladder – to revisit the development of the sanitation ladder as an important tool to measure progress on the sanitation target set by the MDGs. (www.iwaponline.com/washdev/001/0003/0010003.pdf)

Opportunity areas where the impartial strength of the SuSanA can be used to generate collated information from a multitude of stakeholder inputs for the sanitation sector through collaboration and investment by members:
  • Knowledge management: in the sanitation sector through overviews of all research, capacity development initiatives and member activity. Promotion and offering of free access to sanitation sector information on current innovations, tools and progress.
  • Discussion / collaboration: set-up discussion groups for members needs where collaboration can take place as well as use of existing SuSanA infrastructure such as the working groups (WG) for future member funded initiatives.
  • Sustainable sanitation events: the platform can be used to house all online requirements of a sanitation conference with registration forms, pre- and post-conference pages and knowledge management of conference materials.
  • Establishing regional nodes: regionally based SuSanA nodes focussed on the regional context and stakeholders, using or adapting the existing infrastructure of the SuSanA platform to enable regional working platforms.

The SuSanA secretariat would like to inform you briefly of the dates of the upcoming opportunities for you to provide feedback on the draft SuSanA roadmap with the current working title of “Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA) post-2015 – roadmap 2013 to 2018 towards more sustainable sanitation systems”.

Dates all in 2013:
22 August a draft SuSanA roadmap will be circulated to the network.
22 August period opens for written feedback on the roadmap.
31 August the draft roadmap will be presented for feedback and input at the 17th SuSanA meeting in Stockholm.
28 September period closes for written feedback on the roadmap.
28 October target for a final version of the roadmap to be circulated (date subject to change depending on the amount of feedback received).

As a follow on to the SuSanA Core Group and Key Stakeholder meeting in Eschborn on 19 April 2013, a small group met in Willisau, Switzerland for a workshop to progress the roadmap drafting process.

The one and half day workshop was hosted by cewas in Willisau, and was attended by: Dorothee Spuhler, Johannes Heeb, Roland Schertenleib, Conrad Thombansen, Trevor Surridge, Thilo Panzerbieter, Rahul Ingle, Madeleine Fogde, Wolfgang Pfefferkorn, Graham Alabaster, Arne Panesar and Naomi Radke

The output from this workshop is the draft roadmap that you will receive for feedback on the 22 August 2013.
