Offline Medical Wikipedia App - adding more sanitation related topics where they overlap

Thanks for your post, James. What is Wikimedia CH?

And it would be awesome to see more sanitation-related pages in this offline medical Wikipedia App that you're offering. But how would you decide which sanitation-related articles are of relevance? I assume there is limited space?

One option would be to take all the ones that are tagged with WikiProject Sanitation (see e.g. listing here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProj...tation/Popular_pages ), but there would be too many purely technical articles in there.

Maybe you could make a selection by using this listing:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProj...ion#Lists_by_content

e.g. only including the ones that fall into these categories:

• Behaviour
• Concept or program
• Hygiene (includes cleaning products)
• Material to be sanitized or treated
• Medical and health
• Medical, helminths
• Technology (toilets and sanitary ware equipment)

What are your plans so far?

Yes we would take all the ones tagged by the project.

Wikimedia CH is Wikimedia Switzerland. The Swiss chapter of the Wikimedia movement.

Re: Offline Medical Wikipedia App - adding more sanitation related topics where they overlap

Hey All

We at Wiki Project Med Foundation and Wikimedia CH have recent updated our offline medical app for android. The current version contains all English medical, pharmaceutical, and anatomy content including images. It is fairly large at about 1Gb so download it when you have decent wifi. You will than have access to content when cell reception either does not exist or is too expensive.

Like all of Wikipedia it is free and under an open license. We are working to develop similar apps in other languages.

While some sanitation related topics are currently included as they overlap with medicine we plan
specifically to add the rest of them in the next version.

Re: Offline Medical Wikipedia App - adding more sanitation related topics where they overlap

Would you take even those sanitation-related articles that have a low quality rating so far (like stub, start or C)?

And I wonder how come Wikimedia Switzerland is at the forefront of this, even though it is presumably rather small? Is there a particular reason for that, e.g. funding support by the government or a large NGO like Caritas or alike?

All of them is easiest. Not exactly sure why WM CH (Wikimedia Switzerland) has taken this on. They are one of the bigger chapters by the way.

Re: Offline Medical Wikipedia App

Please NOTE: There is another app called "Offline Medical Wikipedia". This one is not related to us, is not free, and does not appear to work. Our app is called "Medical Wikipedia (Offline)".

Re: Offline Medical Wikipedia App

Some updates about this Offline Medical Wikipedia App which includes all the sanitation articles from Wikipedia, too:

James Heilman wrote on July 21 in the HIFA Dgroup:

Hey All

Today we launched a second language of our offline medical Wikipedia app
(Chinese). It can be downloaded from google play here
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=or...kiwixcustomwikimedzh
and
of course is not only free but freely licensed.

The English version
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=or...x.kiwixcustomwikimed
has
been downloaded more than 15k times with about 80% of downloads being from
the developing world. The app currently only works for android. We hope to
come out with further language versions soon and are working on additional
methods of distribution.

Email me if you are interested in getting involved.

++++++

This offline version takes all articles from Wikipedia that have been tagged with one of the following four Wikipedia projects:

WP:MED (medicine)
WP:Sanitation *
WP:Anatomy
WP:Pharmacology

* This is of course the one which I have been contributing to (see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Sanitation or see here on the Forum: forum.susana.org/forum/categories/198-wi...le-bit-of-their-time )

On Twitter I saw this information on 15 June:

KIWIX ‏@KiwixOffline
Our #Wikipedia #Offline #Medical #Encyclopaedia for #Android is meanwhile in the TOP20 medical apps @WikiProjectMed
play.google.com/store/search?q=medical&c=apps

It's nice to know that sanitation as a topic is firmly embedded with all the other healthcare articles in this App which has doctors, medical students, healthcare providers etc. in developing countries as their target audience. Let's continue to improve the scope and quality of the sanitation articles on Wikipedia!
