Village Cleanliness Index (Government of India)

The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Government of India, has issued guidelines on calculating the cleanliness of villages to develop an index. This will help rank villages. The goal is to raise awareness about overall cleanliness that includes solid and liquid waste management, sanitation and hygiene.

Issued in September 2016, the note is available at mdws.gov.in/sites/default/files/SBM.pdf It includes parameters of managing solid waste, water, presence and use of toilets. A detailed statistical analysis from a sample of 70,000 households in 75 districts was conducted to work out the parameters and the weight to be attached to each.

The data from this will be included in the MIS of the Swachh Bharat Mission, after ratification by the village assembly.
