Re: Key documents for the sub-category on nutrition and WASH

Dear all,

I moved the selected top readings into a new thread, which is now the new "sticky thread" of this sub-category.
You find it here: forum.susana.org/92-nutrition-and-wash.....n-nutrition-and-wash

Re: Key documents for the sub-category on nutrition and WASH

This thread is a "sticky note". It contains a recommendation and orientation for newcomers regarding the recommended top five documents in the thematic area of "Nutrition and WASH", grouped into “policy”, “implementation” and “research”:

Policy

1. WaterAid, ACF, SHARE (2017). The Recipe for Success: how policy-makers can integrate water, sanitation and hygiene into actions to end malnutrition. www.susana.org/en/knowledge-hub/resource...library/details/2857

Based on a country level analysis of the cross-integration of nutrition and WASH in their respective plans and policies, the publication gives specific recommendations to all relevant stakeholders. The key findings of the country level analysis are presented in a rating tool using the colors of a traffic light, which can be applied to other country cases as well.

2. German WASH Network (2017). 2+6=17 Linking WASH and Nutrition – A Blueprint for Living SDG 17. www.susana.org/en/knowledge-hub/resource...library/details/2830

The publication to a large extent, is based on a survey and interviews with relevant stakeholder groups from both thematic areas, WASH and nutrition. It shows the perceptions of one’s own thematic area and the respective other as well as the expectations towards the different stakeholder groups. The key bottlenecks are identified, their gaps and hindrances are stated and helpful ideas and approaches to overcome them are provided.

Implementation

3. ACF (2017). WASH’Nutrition – A Practical Guidebook on increasing nutritional impact through integration of WASH and nutrition programmes. For practitioners in humanitarian and development contexts. www.susana.org/en/knowledge-hub/resource...library/details/2716

The guidebook focuses on mothers and young children as primary target group. It provides practical support along the five pillars of the WASH-Nutrition strategy: “integration”, “mother & child dyad”, “behavior change”, “coordination of stakeholders” and “ensuring a WASH minimum package”. Practical suggestions are made on how to implement linkages of WASH and nutrition at different levels and in humanitarian and development contexts. Practioners are supported with specific methodological resources on the overall process of implementation (programming, identification, formulation, financing, implementation and monitoring, evaluation).

4. UNICEF (2016). Nutrition - WASH Tool kit. Guide for Practical Joint Actions. Nutrition-Water, Sanitatioon and Hygiene (WASH). www.susana.org/en/knowledge-hub/resource...library/details/2925

The toolkit, originally designed for UNICEF country office staff, describes how to integrate WASH and nutrition at various stages of programing in development contexts. It is also very valid for other organisations’ country teams and can support national and local governments in their planning efforts.. For the integration it is suggested to connect the theory of change with different perspectives, particularly the “helicopter view” and the “road view”. The integration of WASH and nutrition in the humanitarian context is briefly described.

Research

5. Danaei et al. (2016). Risk factors for childhood stunting in 137 developing countries: A comparative risk assessment analysis at global, regional and country level. www.susana.org/en/knowledge-hub/resource...library/details/2680

Based on country level data from global pooling projects of population health surveys and meta-analyses of epidemiological studies from 137 countries, the article quantifies the independent effects of stunting per region and risk factor. The researchers found “fetal growth restriction”, “unimproved sanitation” and “Diarrhea” to be the leading risks for stunting.

Re: Key documents for the sub-category on nutrition and WASH

Dear Elisabeth,

I can see your point, and also appreciate it.

You say: ". . . who is totally new to the topic," and " . . . they may wish to focus on initially (and then expand later)."

Interesting reasoning. What about those, who are not new to the topic? But, then, the new person may not be able to get the information he is seeking, from the 5 publications.

Since you mention the point of expansion, would it be possible to have 2 lists - one of 5, and the other of 10?

Once again, just a modest suggestion - no big deal :cheer:

Smiles,

Re: Key documents for the sub-category on nutrition and WASH

Hi Mughal,
You wrote: "Since there a number of good publications on WASH-Nutrition, you may like to examine the possibilities of increasing the number of publications to 10 (from 5) - just a modest suggestion."

If you put yourself into the shoes of someone who is totally new to the topic, they would probably appreciate if someone told them "these are the most important 5 documents you should read" (maybe 5 is even too many; perhaps just 3 would be better; but that would be even harder to choose!)

All the other good, interesting and important publications are still accessible as well, by using the search function in the library, e.g. filtering by Working Group 12 as a filter will give you up to 50 preselected publications, and filtering with a keyword search will yield even more (see explanation in the first post of this thread on Page 1).

This exercise is all about "curation" - trying to decide for someone else what they may wish to focus on initially (and then expand later).

Thanks for your suggestion. I just thought I should quickly explain our reasoning behind the "5 key documents".

Cheers,
Elisabeth

Re: Key documents for the sub-category on nutrition and WASH

Hi!

We wish to share some materials on nutrition and WASH as well that can be categorized under “Implementation”:

Fit for Food – Working Together for Better Nutrition and Hygiene in Schools in Lao PDR www.fitforschool.international/resource/...-pdr-with-subtitles/ :

In Oudomxay Province, Northern Lao PDR, the Fit for School program has partnered with the World Food Program (WFP) to spread the improvement of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in schools, with a particular focus on the influence of better WASH on nutrition. In 10 schools that receive school lunch support from WFP, the Fit For School approach uses existing structures to improve WASH by focusing on daily group activities, such as handwashing and toothbrushing and implementing routine cleaning schedules to maintain the facilities. GIZ and WFP both bring expertise and funding to achieve the joint objective of improving hygiene practices and nutritional gains in schools.

Low-cost and Healthy Recipes for School Feeding
www.fitforschool.international/resource/...-for-school-feeding/ :
This recipe book has been produced to help DepEd ARMM schools implement the School Based Feeding Program. The simple lunch and snack recipes have been developed specifically for the Islamic context of ARMM, with the intention of minimizing the burden on schools to prepare meals for large groups of children. Lunch recipes are based on rice and mung beans, which are easy to procure in bulk and store, in combination with additional local ingredients.

Localized School-Based Feeding Concept: Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao www.fitforschool.international/resource/localized/ :
This report provides an overview of the pilot experience of the Localized School-Based Feeding Program (LSBFP) that aims to provide the Department of Education and its development partners the insights to an alternative approach to school feeding.

Kind regards,
Hiyas

Re: Key documents for the sub-category on nutrition and WASH

Dear Ms. Jona,

Thank you for making it clear.

Since there a number of good publications on WASH-Nutrition, you may like to examine the possibilities of increasing the number of publications to 10 (from 5) - just a modest suggestion.

Re: Key documents for the sub-category on nutrition and WASH

Dear Mr. Mughal,

I'm always looking for WASH-Nutrition publications :-)

But currently, we are revisiting the 5 so-called "best readings" to allow people to easily enter this subject by giving recommendations what to read first to get a good overview in the respective sub-categories. Every now and then, those best readings need to be updated.

In our last WG 12 meeting and in following discussions, we came up with the 5 publications (see previous post).

Hope, it is a bit clearer now.

Best,

Re: Key documents for the sub-category on nutrition and WASH

Dear Elisabeth, dear WG12,

For the update of the sticky note for the top five readings as you suggest, it would be useful to have documents following each of the new sub-caterogies of this WG, meaning e.g. two with a focus on policy/advocacy, two with a focus on implementation and at least one research paper.

Policy / Advocacy:
  • The Recipe for Success (WaterAid, ACF, SHARE Consortium, 2017)
  • 2+6=17 Linking WASH and Nutrition – A Blueprint for Living SDG 17 (German WASH Network, 2017)
Implementation:
  • WASH’Nutrition – A Practical Guidebook (ACF, 2017)
  • Nutrition-WASH Toolkit (UNICEF, 2016)
Research:
  • Risk factors for childhood stunting in 137 developing countries: A comparative risk assessment analysis at global, regional and country level (Danaei et al., 2016)
This research suggestion has not yet extensively been discussed, glad to hear opinions.

Re: Key documents for the sub-category on nutrition and WASH

Dear Jona,
Great, yes please, let's revisit this! My post at the start from this thread is from nearly two years ago, so it's high time that it gets updated. The idea with these sticky posts was to highlight the "Top 5" (really just five!) and then give further links where people can find out more.

How about we do it like this. We end this thread (by locking it) and make it unsticky. Then you set up a new post which is in the same style as how mine was (namely the one from 14 Dec 2015) and we make that a sticky post. Sticky means it gets a different color and always stays at the top of this sub-category.
Good plan?

Cheers,
Elisabeth

Re: Key documents for the sub-category on nutrition and WASH

Dear Elisabeth,

Thanks for the "sticky post" about best readings and thanks for the suggestions above.

We tabled the question of "best readings" in our last WG 12 meeting. With some really useful toolkits and publications that came out this year, the discussion deserves a revisit every now and then.

Here are the results from our discussion in Stockholm (by year of publication)
  • The Recipe for Success (WaterAid, ACF, SHARE Consortium, 2017)
  • 2+6=17 Linking WASH and Nutrition – A Blueprint for Living SDG 17 (German WASH Network, 2017)
  • WASH’Nutrition – A Practical Guidebook (ACF, 2017)
  • What Lies Behind a Good Nutritional Status? (ACF, 2017)
  • SUN in Practice Briefs
  • The missing ingredients (WaterAid, SHARE Consortium, 2016)
  • Nutrition-WASH Toolkit (UNICEF, 2016)
  • WASH in Nut Strategy (Regional WASH Group, West and Central Africa, 2015)

Happy to hear some reflections about them.
Best,
