Dear all,

The NaWaTech consortium is pleased to inform you a new date and location for the International Conference on Innovations in Sustainable Water and wastewater Treatment Systems (ISWATS) has been fixed. The conference will take place on April 21st – 23rd, 2016 in Pune (at the Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration YASHADA).

The conference will include presentations of findings from all four projects supported under the framework of the India – European Union Science & Technology Cooperation in water technology and management by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and the European Commission (i.e. NaWaTech, SARASWATI, SWINGS, and Eco India).

The strategic objectives of the conference are to exchange knowledge, technologies, guidelines and tools for implementation and operation among academia and public authorities, skilled service providers and SMEs, enabling research partnerships and creating favourable environments for the application of treatment systems and technologies for sustainable water / wastewater treatment, reuse and recycle.

Please find more information in attached brochure and at www.iswats.com. Interested participants may submit their abstracts for oral and/or poster presentation on any of the conference themes (abstract submission deadline: February 29th, 2016).

Re: Different urban scenarios for Wastewater Treatment and Recycling - NaWaTech project in Pune and Nagpur, India (+ 5 case studies)

Dear all,

in the attachments below you can find more information about all the case study implementation sites within the NaWaTech project (documents are in draft version, final versions will be available soon). At six locations in Nagpur and Pune, in the Indian state of Maharashtra, different combinations of natural and compact technical wastewater treatment technologies were combined in a modular fashion to better be able to cope with water shortages in urbanized areas in India.

Furthermore, our NaWaKit has gone online at www.sswm.info/category/step-nawatech/introduction. The NaWaKit is a knowledge platform for water practitioners in India, containing all the key results and information of the project. It has been designed to provide the needed technical and business strategy tools to support water practitioners (such as local SMEs, service providers, entrepreneurs and consultants working in the water and sanitation sector in India) when conceiving, launching and growing a new venture in the water and wastewater sector as well as to guide them during the design, implementation, operation and maintenance of decentralised water and wastewater treatment systems in urban India.

The NaWaTech team hopes you will find this information useful!

Best wishes,
Katie

Re: Different urban scenarios for Wastewater Treatment and Recycling - NaWaTech project in Pune and Nagpur, India

With population on the rise and increasing demand for freshwater, there is a stress on the available water resources. With finite resources in hand, there is a need to encourage decentralized approaches for wastewater treatment and reuse of water, especially in the urban areas. Most conventional systems implemented today are difficult to establish for smaller volumes and also consume a lot of energy for operation. Hence the concept of natural water systems and treatment technologies to cope with water shortages in urbanized areas in India – NaWaTech.

The NaWaTech project is a joint implementation and research project between India and EU and is funded by the Department of Science and Technology (Government of India) and the European Commission. The idea is to assess and enhance the potentials of natural and technical water treatment systems to suit to the local hydro-geological conditions. The systems will also be able to treat variable flows of wastewater in order to reuse it and to supplement traditional sources to cope with urban water shortages today and in the future.

The project implementation will take place in the cities of Pune and Nagpur. This paper aims to focus on the site implementation in Pune. These sites are: College of Engineering, Pune; Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran Office; Amanora Park Town; Indradhanushya Environment and Citizenship Centre.

Re: NaWaTech Compendium of Technologies avaliable on SuSanA library

Dear Pawan, dear all,

Thanks a lot for your feedback on the NaWaTech compendium. You are right, this compendium tries to focus more on the specific case of India and inspire practitioners what sustainable solutions might be possible in this context, rather than being a detailed engineering manual for the various technologies (for this other sources exist). As Lucia mentioned, we are working on a revision, so any comments are highly appreciated (and we’ll try to include a slightly smaller file).

Unfortunately our project website (www.nawatech.net) is still offline; however, it should be fixed by the end of the week. I invite you all to check it then, as other project reports and news will be regularly posted there. For example, we are planning a NaWaTech conference in India towards the end of next year. Furthermore, you can find information abour our NaWaTech Community of Practice on Facebook (www.facebook.com/pages/NaWaTech-Communit...tice/362587563828187).

Best regards,
Katie

Re: NaWaTech Compendium of Technologies avaliable on SuSanA library

Dear All

I have just gone through the book particularly the chapters dealing with waste water treatment. It is collection of available technologies. It mentions technologies – ABR, Anaerobic filter, SBR, MBR, MMBR, biogas technology, and sludge drying beds- planted and unplanted and others. It lacks technical details of the technologies mentioned. Some chapters on water and waste water have been written by Ecosan Services Foundation with examples in India.
Under references, it mentions book on Compendium of technologies by EAWAG/ SANDEC. Regarding Sludge drying beds for septage management, information available in the book by EAWAG/ SANDAC is much more and practical than this book.
The book may be useful for those interested in the field. I could not find the cost of the book.
It took about 2 hrs to download the book.

Re: NaWaTech Compendium of Technologies avaliable on SuSanA library

Dear Elisabeth,

thanks for your note. Indeed the file is quite large, as the book includes many fotos, drawings and full graphic design. We are working on a revision, so we´ll try and have a lower resolution version in the comming months, which we will of course share with you.

The NaWaTech Compendium covers specifically the case of India, and includes specific chapters about the water situation in India, and examples of previous experiences in India in each technology factsheet. I invite you to have some patience downloading the file and check out the book, it would be really nice to hear your comments on the content.

As for our project website (www.nawatech.net), it´s currently down but our IT department is working on it and should be up again in the coming days. There you will find the Compendium (exaclty the same file) as well as many other reports, since our results are public, so please log in in a couple of days!

Best regards,
Lucía

Re: NaWaTech Compendium of Technologies avaliable on SuSanA library

I have often noticed that when the documents are large in size, they are bifurcated in to chapters, so a person can download each chapter, which are of lower size - and this benefits people with slow internet connection.

Re: NaWaTech Compendium of Technologies avaliable on SuSanA library

Dear Lucia,

I was just trying to look at the document you mentioned here (Compendium of Technologies) but when I tried to open it, I found it is 250 MB large!?
This seems way too large for something you want people to download and read or is it more the printed version that you are trying to disseminate rather than the softcopy? (even I stopped the download and I am on a fast connection...)

Could you tell us how it differs from other similar pulications like the Eawac-Sandec Compendium of Sanitation Systems Technologies? I guess yours is specific for India? Does it include data on costs?

I did a quick Google search to try and find your project's website but this link did not work:
www.nawatech.net/

I got to it from the seecon page as seecon was one of your partners:
www.seecon.ch/en/projects/nawatech-natur...hortages-urban-areas

Anyway, I look forward to hearing more from you what the outcomes and learnings from this project in India were.

Regards,
Elisabeth
