Re: vermilter for slaughterhouse wate water treatment

Hi Arthur,

I'm not at all a specialist in this question but.....
A neighbour farm here in Germany had a legal eu-conform slaughterhouse. He had a thermopile (50-55 degrees C) biogas plant and was allowed to spoil his complete wastewater into the plant. What he had to assure was the time the wastewater was in the plant but I can't remember the time.
The other good thing about this combination is the handling of the fat waste. Fat is full of energy and as far as I know almost completely converted to energy.
Unlucky wise this man died by accident a few years back and I can't answer further questions.
Perhaps an idea suitable for you??

Wish you success and a nice day,

Heiner

Re: vermilter for slaughterhouse wate water treatment

A quick review of Industrial and Hazardous Wastes Treatment suggests that (P 763, Treatment of meat wastes):

Biological filters have not been widely adopted for the treatment of slaughterhouse wastewaters despite the lower operating costs compared with activated sludge systems. Obtaining an effluent with a low BOD and ammonia in a single-reactor system can provide conditions suitable for the proliferation of secondary grazing macro-invertebrate species such as fly larvae, and this may be unacceptable in the vicinity of a slaughterhouse. There is also the need for very good fat removal from the influent wastewater flow, as this will otherwise tend to coat the surface of the biofilm support medium. The use of traditional biological filtration for abattoir wastewater treatment is discussed by Philips [72], and further reviewed by Parker et al. [73].
72. Philips, S.A. Wastewater treatment handles cattle killing waste. Water Sewage Works 1975 122, 50–51.
73. Parker, D.S.; Lutz, M.P.; Pratt, A.M. New trickling filter applications in the USA. Water Sci. Technol. 1990, 22, 215–226.

Note these are very old references and refer to trickling filters rather than vermifiltration.

In my view none of these present any insurmountable issues provided your design is appropriate. I'd propose a wide primary vermifilter with lots of surface area for digesting grease, fat and meat waste, then second generation vermifiltration technology , using drainage cells (because of their low cost) with recirculation, wrapped in mosquito/fly netting.

cheers

Hi Arthur,

I am just wondering if your query was answered or if you require further information? If you have found relevant information elsewhere then please copy that (or the relevant links) into this thread so that others can benefit, too. Thanks.

Re: vermilter for slaughterhouse wate water treatment

Vermifiltration is an ideal solution for this type of wastewater due to the high BOD loading. Unlike conventional activated sludge the system will not generate high utility bills or produce large volumes of sludge. Design and sizing of the unit will be determined by the volume to be treated along with robust analysis of the wastewater and discharge permit requirments. Depending on the solid waste management practices at the facility it may require up front technology to deal with gross solids and FOG.
