Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme (EIACP)

The Environmental Information System (ENVIS) was established in 1983 by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India, to collect, collate, storing, retrieving, and disseminating environmental information to a wide range of stakeholders. In 2022, ENVIS was renamed as the Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme (EIACP) its scope beyond information dissemination and strengthen environmental awareness, Green SKill Development Programme (GSDP) Certificate Course, capacity building programe, and sustainable livelihood initiatives across the country.

The primary mission of EIACP is to provide easy access to reliable, comprehensive, and up-to-date environmental information for decision-makers, researchers, academicians, scientists, students, policymakers, and the general public. The programme supports informed decision-making and promotes understanding of environmental issues at local, national, and global levels.

EIACP operates through a decentralized network of approximately 54 Centres across India, hosted by government institutions, universities, research organizations, and non-governmental organizations. These centres function as specialized knowledge hubs and resource partners that collect and disseminate thematic and region-specific environmental information.

The EIACP Network Portal serves as a central platform for inter-centre coordination, knowledge sharing, and public access to environmental resources. The portal has been designed to provide users with seamless access to a vast repository of environmental data, reports, publications, best practices, case studies, and awareness materials.

In addition to information management, EIACP plays a vital role in promoting environmental awareness, capacity building, skill development, and sustainable livelihood opportunities. By integrating environmental knowledge with education and training initiatives, the programme contributes to strengthening environmental governance and supporting India's sustainable development goals.

Through its nationwide network and digital platforms, EIACP continues to serve as a key mechanism for enhancing environmental literacy, facilitating research, supporting policy formulation, and encouraging public participation in environmental conservation and sustainable development.
