Dear Everyone
Subject: Application of slurry from toilet linked biogas plants for agriculture
Toilet linked biogas plants is not very popular in India, in spite of financial supports from the Government of India and different states governments. Lack of awareness coupled with psychological taboos associated with human wastes and use of biogas from such wastes are the important factors for such non-acceptance. Furthermore, there has been lack of demonstration on benefits of toilet linked biogas to households.
A detail demonstration of toilet linked biogas plants was conducted during 2014-2017 in different villages in Gujarat where a few hundred such toilet linked biogas plants were implemented with the technical supports from WASTE, the Netherlands , FINISH India, Foundation for Environment and Sanitation and fixed financial support from the Government of India and Gujarat State Government .
All toilet linked biogas plants are basically cow dung fed. In previous experiments it was revealed that toilet linked biogas plants have higher rate of production of biogas and percentage of methane in biogas and plant nutrients than without toilet linked biogas plants.
The present study is on use of slurry of toilet linked biogas plants on the yields and quality of different crops and vegetables and assessing its economic importance. There is significant increase on yields of wheat and different vegetables using slurry over the controls having no fertlisers and also with DAP and urea, in addition to use of biogas for cooking. None of the families having biogas plants is using LPG for cooking, all uses only biogas for cooking purpose. Such economic returns helped a lot in dissemination of toilet linked biogas plants. There is huge demand of such biogas plants.
A detail report on the experiments done in Gujarat is attached.
