India has seen a huge number of toilets being constructed in the last few years. But, is that the end of our sanitation problems in rural
areas? The answer is No, We have built toilets but with that, a new set of
issues of handling the solid and liquid waste has cropped up all across the
globe. This waste will seep into our groundwater resources, or escape in
water bodies or just remain to lie in the open, creating new health and
environmental hazards. This issue of waste generation is much more intensified
in rural areas as they are majorly dependent on on-site sanitation systems.
Regular emptying, cleaning, transportation, and treatment of the waste
generated from the OSS are as important as constructing toilets. The same has
been highlighted in the 2019 Joint Monitoring Program also.
Out of the box thinking, brainstorming is needed to address these challenges arising in wake of the recent developments.

CSE has launched an online course on “Faecal Sludge Management in Rural Areas”. This is
a two-week course from 30th October'20 to 12th November'20. The course comprises self-study, technological learning tools such as presentation sand audios and videos featuring case studies. The training will provide online
forums and discussions where ever required. Quizzes and assignments will be
part of this program. The course will facilitate the participants to interact
and learn from experts through online interactions and a webinar. The training program shall enable participants to understand the types of available technologies
for the management of grey and black water, how to reuse the treated
wastewater, how to make usage of toilets sustainable, and how can information
dissemination be done effectively to create awareness and proper disposal.
