Nature-based solutions for water and waste management

Greetings from Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) !

Indian cities are on a deadly spiral. On one hand, water scarcity is growing; on the other hand, water is getting increasingly polluted, escalating the cost of providing safe water and sanitation or leading, increasingly, rise in illnesses and deaths. Our cities must re-invent and re-work the methods and technologies of conveying water and disposing waste. The current method has problems – it is capital intensive, creates and maintains a divide between rich and the poor and is natural-resource intensive. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and International Water Association (IWA) recommends integration of the urban water cycle, including water supply, wastewater, storm water and groundwater management for creating water wise cities. The national missions such as Smart City, AMRUT and HRIDAY have identified water access and augmentation, wastewater treatment, septage management and reuse as major components of the mission. Achieving these missions would not be possible without understanding the nature based solutions.

After running this training programme successfully for the past five years and based on high demand, we are glad to again announce the short term residential training programme on Nature-Based Solutions for Water and Waste Management, at our state-of-art new campus (Anil Agarwal Environment Training Institute, Nimli). The purpose of the training is to explore possible innovations spanning areas of alternative approach of water management and show how it can be applied in cities while taking up existing opportunities to use it for increasing cities’ amenities and quality of life. The training will be highlighting the components of Water Sensitive Urban Design and Planning (WSUDP): Rainwater Harvesting (RWH), Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDS) and Wastewater recycle and reuse. The first two days of the training will focus on SuDS, Green Infrastructure and urban RWH followed by two days dedicated on DWWTs, reuse and recover component of WSUDP. At the end of the training, participants will develop skills to manage available local water resources in a sustainable way by integrating it into the planning and designing of cities.

The training programme will follow a mix method approach involving lectures, in-class exercises, interactive discussions and audio-video training support. The participants will get the opportunity to plan and design water sensitive urban systems as part of ‘Do It Yourself’ - group exercise.

In order to attend the comprehensive four day training programme, a fee of Rs. 30,000/- is applicable (including training fee and accommodation).
