Re: Videos to introduce scientific publications in MOOCs

Hi Chaiwe,

The level of treatment always depends on the type of enduse. Unfortunately, for faecal
sludge few direct guidelines currently exist. I find that IWMI has some useful
guidance for use as a soil conditioner: www.iwmi.cgiar.org/publications/resource...ery-reuse/series-15/
www.iwmi.cgiar.org/Publications/wle/rrr/..._reuse-series_14.pdf

Often when faecal sludge standards don't exist, standards for existing products that are
similar to the faecal sludge product are used in practice. For example, for
soil conditioner, standards for commercially available compost are used. If you
search online, there are regulations available on application of sewage sludge
or biosolids from specific countries, for example the United States have
guidelines on biosolids use, or the Lebanese Wastewater Reuse and Sludge
Valorisation Guidelines. I don't know of any Zambia specific guidelines, I
would recommend to contact your local authorities.
I hope that answers your question.

Best wishes,
Nienke

Re: Videos to introduce scientific publications in MOOCs

Dear Chaiwe

the video  "5.5. Innovations in solid fuels" in the FSM-MOOC provides information on briquettes and other energy recovery products
that can be produced from dried faecal sludge. It's possible to watch it directly in the MOOC ( www.coursera.org/learn/faecalsludge/lect...tions-in-solid-fuels ) or on the FSM-MOOC YouTube-channel .

Best, Fabian

Re: Videos to introduce scientific publications in MOOCs

Dear SuSanA Member Chaiwe and others :
Wish you all well wishes,  and would like to know if Briquette making with FS as raw matter input ( may be bio- mass added ) for calorific increment .
Wish to be apprised on more info:
The output, (does it get released in brick form) used as for fuel or any other uses.
If used as fuel, then ash would be evolved, Is this ash produce whether further used- may be for brick making with clay binder admixed.
Thus this matter ie FS as Briquette gets closed in this completion- product cycle-loop.
This matter may be expanded, by those, who had been aware of this route - path, use of FS Etc.
Points issued in the communities interest and more replication  Etc..

Re: Videos to introduce scientific publications in MOOCs

Hello All,

Does the MOOCs have any videos or trainings on Briquette production from FS? This looks like something that could fit well in the series on Biowaste processing.

Hello Laura,

Did you hear anything back on standards of usage of treated sludge in Zambia?

Re: Videos to introduce scientific publications in MOOCs

Hi all,

two new spotlight videos are now online :

The former director of Sandec, Roland Schertenleib introduces the publication “A Sanitation Journey”, which has been published by the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA).

Stefan Diener introduces the 2nd edition of the book "Black Soldier Fly Biowaste Processing - A Step-by-Step Guide", which has been prepared for practical use, explaining the required materials and equipment, as well as each working step similar to a cookbook with its respective recipes.

Hi Chaiwe,

Thank you for your feedback and for including the thumbnails in your post.

I have asked a colleague to help me answer your question about the standards of usage of treated sludge in Zambia. She'll get back to me or reply here soon.

Best regards,
Laura.

Re: Videos to introduce scientific publications in MOOCs

Hi Laura,

A video is certainly a quick and easy way to capture the attention of learners and provide them information on the content of  publications.  In the case of Zambia, we are yet to have standards for usage of treated sludge... I understand Sandec has done a lot of work in this regard. Have you made any recommendations in this regard for countries you have been working in? I know for certain Zambia is one of them.

I have included the thumbnails to these two videos here for quick access:

Re: Videos to introduce scientific publications in MOOCs

Hi Laura,
Welcome to the SuSanA discussion forum! The two videos that you posted are nice, informative, short & snappy. I enjoyed seeing the two key authors (Linda and Abishek) - who both also post on this discussion forum regularly -  explain the gist of their publications. So thank you for pointing this out to us, and good luck with your MOOCs!

Elisabeth

Videos to introduce scientific publications in MOOCs

Hi everyone,

My name is Laura Baquedano. I’ve been working at Sandec for more than a year now, and this is my first post in the SuSanA Forum!

At the Digital Learning Team at Sandec, we have been working in a new video format for Sandec’s MOOCs. Its goal is to introduce scientific publications and encourage MOOC learners to read them.

Until now, two videos in this format have been produced. They have been integrated in Sandec’s MOOCs in Coursera and in their respective YouTube channel.
  1. Methodsfor Faecal Sludge Analysis. You can access the video here (
    ).
  2. Advancementsin and Integration of Water, Sanitation and Solid Waste in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. You can watch the video here (
    ).
We are looking forward to your comments and feedback, either here or by email ( This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ).

Thanks,
Laura
