Re: Copies of ISO sanitation standards are available for download free of charge from ANSI website

Hi All,
There have been many posts over the past few years about how to get copies of the ISO sanitation standards. Perhaps the moderators can put this post in the most appropriate thread.
I found out recently that the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has a web portal where one can download ISO 30500, ISO 31800, ISO 24521, ISO 24510 and ISO 24511 free of charge as long as they register an account (email and password required).
I have used it and was able to get full text copies of all the above 5 standards.

How? Visit this web page sanitation.ansi.org/ and click/tap "Download Standards"

Kind regards and happy reading!

Re: ISO 30500 standard published (Reinvented Toilet Standard Development project by TÜV SÜD Asia Pacific Pte Ltd)

Curious if any one has experience with having their sanitation system air and noise emission measured in accordance to the ISO 30500 and can share how much it roughly cost?

Cheers,
Jenna

Re: ISO 30500 standard published (Reinvented Toilet Standard Development project by TÜV SÜD Asia Pacific Pte Ltd)

There was a presentation about testing the new ISO 30500 standard at the FSM5 Conference in Feb 2019:

Validation Testing of ISO30500:2018 on Innovative Non-Sewered Sanitation Systems
by Raymond Lee, Syed Zaki Abdullah, Mei Yee Chan, Chris Chan
fsm5.susana.org/images/FSM_Conference_Ma...l_speakers-notes.pdf

The presentation explains the spiking methods to test the log reduction values (LRV)

Conclusion
• Minimum spike amount and LRVs are
achievable, and repeatable at such scale
• Challenges with procurement of Ascaris for
helminth testing
• Next steps: more extensive testing and
collaboration with partners to conduct full
ISO30500 testing and certification

I wonder where one can buy Ascaris eggs from for such spiking tests!? Perhaps a market niche?

Re: ISO 30500 standard published (Reinvented Toilet Standard Development project by TÜV SÜD Asia Pacific Pte Ltd)

Dear Mei Yee,

it was interesting to read that the ISO 30500 standard has already been published. I did not notice your previous message from November in this website because I do not regularly follow other forum categories than "Sanitation systems".

I have not yet bought the right to read the whole standard but I am sure it is worth reading, especially for all those researching, developing and designing "unconventional" toilet and wastewater systems, also here in Europe. Due to my connections to the work of ISO TC224 WG8 I was aware that also this other ISO standard was under preparation. The ISO TC224 WG8 prepared ISO 24521 standard, published in 2016. It was mentioned also in the bibliography of your standard.

Claudia mentioned the European standard EN 12566 (also mentioned in your biblipgraphy). Part 3 of EN 12566 includes description of a functionality test for small wastewater treatment systems. It was not easy to find a common European understanding of the procedure, duration, test water quality etc. for such a test. It will be interesting to find out, if you have something like that in your ISO 30500.

Congratulations for your achivement! I hope the standard will gain numerous users and helps in designing better products for all:

Greetings from Finland,
Erkki

Re: ISO 30500 standard published (Reinvented Toilet Standard Development project by TÜV SÜD Asia Pacific Pte Ltd)

Dear Claudia,

thank you for your questions and my apologies for the delayed response. To answer your questions:
1) You can have a free preview on the ISO website www.iso.org/standard/72523.html which you will be able to read the entire Scope and also view the TOC. From the TOC, you will find that it is very different from EN 12566
2) EN12566 is for domestic wastewater treatment plants up to less than 50 PT and does not have a requirement for environment and pathogen. ISO 30500 is a performance-based standard - it could be for a single unit toilet, it could be for multiple front-end with one back-end (treatment part) or it could be for one front-end and one back-end. Spiking of pathogens are involved to make sure the system is efficient in treating pathogens and their output is 100% safe for human health and environment.
In addition, ISO 30500 requires noise and odour tests.
There is no standard similar to ISO 30500 as it is a very wholesome standard with requirements for mechanical, chemical, odour, noise, electrical and microbiology. It is actually a very forward-looking standard for innovative toilet technologies.

Happy to answer any queries you might have.

Cheers,
Mei Yee

Re: ISO 30500 standard published (Reinvented Toilet Standard Development project by TÜV SÜD Asia Pacific Pte Ltd)

Hi Mei Yee Chan

sounds like a great doc! Two questions:
Is it possible to get it or at least a summary free of charge?
Is it similar to the EU norms related to non-sewered sanitation (EN 12566), what is the difference to those?

Thank you
Claudia

ISO 30500 standard published (Reinvented Toilet Standard Development project by TÜV SÜD Asia Pacific Pte Ltd)

Dear all,

Today I would like to introduce another project to you that I have lead here at TÜV SÜD Asia Pacific Pte Ltd in Singapore. It was funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Its main achievement was the publication of the ISO 30500 standard in October this year. The standard's full title is: "Non-sewered sanitation systems -- Prefabricated integrated treatment units -- General safety and performance requirements for design and testing"

Project title: Reinvented Toilet - Standard Development
Duration: 2015 - 2018

Goal
The goal of this project is the development and establishment of an international standard for safe and sustainable sanitation technologies for use by the poor in the developing world with a focus on Reinvented Toilets.

Objectives

The technical standard will ensure that a certified system will meet a clear set of health and environmental safety and regulatory parameters and support the comparison of performance enabling informed decisions. The standard will also provide a common, transparent basis that promotes both technology development and commercial adoption.

Activities
There is no standard available that sufficiently qualifies safe and sustainable sanitation technologies particularly needed in developing countries. This results in regular failure of installed products, the implementation of non-suitable technologies and the lack of innovative solutions. The primary investment outcome is an internationally recognized technical standard for off-the grid (Reinvented Toilets) sanitation technologies. This standard defines the required criteria to qualify sanitation technologies sufficiently in terms of safety, usability, functionality, reliability, efficiency, maintainability, and compliance with environment. Success of this investment is the establishment of this standard in developing countries (target countries) and on an international level, and the massive dissemination of innovative sanitation solutions with the required quality.

Update on 11 Oct 2018:

Almost 3.5 years later, ISO 30500 was published on the 04th October 2018.
See here: www.iso.org/standard/72523.html

Title:
ISO 30500:2018
Non-sewered sanitation systems -- Prefabricated integrated treatment units -- General safety and performance requirements for design and testing

Biggest successes so far:

Tuv Sud contribution as project leaders to PC305 has been recognized by ISO and conferred ISO Excellence Award to three of Tuv Sud employees (www.iso.org/iso-awards.html#excellence-anchor). The ISO Excellence Award has been created to reward the achievements of ISO’s technical experts. The ISO Excellence Award recognizes the contribution of individuals for recent achievements related to ISO’s technical work that can be considered as a major contribution to furthering the interests of standardization and related activities. Any individual nominated in the capacity of expert, project leader or convenor in a committee working group is eligible for the award.

ISO Excellence Award to three of Tuv Sud employees (from left: Gerald Kresta, Mei Yee Chan, Vincent Santos)

Main challenges / frustration:
Getting the right technical experts on board, getting consensus amongst the diverse stakeholders, working on an aggressive timeline

Research or implementation partners:

TÜV SÜD initially developed a private technical standard with a selected group of experts, which was taken as the basis for an ISO International Workshop Agreement (IWA 24:2016, published in September 2016) document. Supported by American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Association Sénégalaise de Normalisation (ASN) and the foundation as the Chairman for Project Committee (PC) 305, IWA 24 was further developed into a full ISO standard.

Grant size: USD $2,983,348
