Re: FSM3 - International Faecal Sludge Management Conference 19-22 Jan 2015 in Hanoi, Vietnam

Dear Elisabeth,

Thank you for your query.

I conferred with the programme committee and the we concluded that we welcome submissions related to management of sludge from UDDTs.

We will upload the following definition of faecal sludge to the website so that there is a clear understanding of the thematic scope.

"Faecal sludge (FS) comes from onsite sanitation technologies, and has not been transported through a sewer. It is raw or partially digested, a slurry or semisolid, and results from the collection, storage or treatment of combinations of excreta and blackwater, with or without greywater. Examples of onsite technologies include pit latrines, unsewered public ablution blocks, septic tanks, aqua privies, and dry toilets."

FS is therefore highly variable in terms of consistency, quantity, and concentration and FSM includes the storage, collection, transport, treatment and safe enduse or disposal of FS.

best regards,

Jonathan

Re: FSM3 - International Faecal Sludge Management Conference 19-22 Jan 2015 in Hanoi, Vietnam

Dear Jonathan,

Just a small question about the FSM3 Conference call for abstracts: the last FSM conference (FSM2 in Durban) also had quite a few presentations on urine diversion topics, e.g. from the VUNA project but also from some of the other BMGF-funded research projects (see: www.susana.org/lang-en/conference-and-tr...-africa-october-2012 for papers, presentations and videos from the FSM2 Conference).

In the call for abstracts for FSM3 I don't see that topic explicitly mentioned. I mean in particular when you speak about Ensuring city-wide FSM service delivery, FS desludging and transportation, and similar: what is the definition of faecal sludge (FS) for this conference? How much water content does something have to have to be called "faecal sludge"?

I am thinking in particular of faeces collection systems from UDDTs (urine-diverting dry toilets), such as the toilets from Sanergy (forum.susana.org/forum/categories/52-mob...ry-loo-user-and-kiva) - does that fall for you under "faecal sludge"? (i.e. the urine and faecal matter collected separately and without water addition)

Or should the abbreviation FSM perhaps also be read as "faecal solids management", not just "faecal sludge management"?

I think it would have been an opportunity to highlight this aspect in the conference brochure, unless you strictly want "wet faecal sludge" papers at the conference and no "dry faecal sludge" papers? Or would you say it falls anyway under this conference theme:
Maximizing resource recovery – how to maximize beneficial use of FS treatment end-products (energy, nutrients and water)

Elisabeth

• FSM as an enterprise - Commercial viability, financing arrangements and cost recovery

• FS desludging and transportation - FS characterization, technologies and O&M of pit emptying, collection and FS transportation

• Sustaining FSM services - Logistics, management arrangements, performance-based contracting

• Innovation in FS treatment - Developments in treatment technologies, co-treatment with organic solid waste; operational performance and O&M

• Maximizing resource recovery - How to maximize beneficial use of FS treatment end-products (energy, nutrients and water)

Re: FSM3 - International Faecal Sludge Management Conference 19-22 Jan 2015 in Hanoi, Vietnam

Thanks Sudhir

I've only just seen your posting.

The call for abstracts and workshops has been delayed by a few days but we are working hard to get the call out for the end of this week.

So, no harm in starting to work on submissions for either a :

a) Technical session; or a
b) Workshop.

The former being the more traditional conference technical session with presentations based upon findings from applied research and development and the latter focusing on promoting discussion on key policy issues, exchange of experiences and develop of tools to support FSM programming.

Workshops proposals on training /capacity building activities will also be welcome.

Selection criteria to be advertised but for all three we are asking for 1 or 2 page abstracts/ summaries in line with the themes that you see on the website.

best regards,

Jonathan
