Re: Reply: UDDT Squat pan needed for Myanmar Project

Hi David,

It is good to know that your project continues, despite complications.

I am surprised that you have not found a Chinese supplier of plastic squat pans yet. Are imports into Myanmar complicated? What is the cost per square meter of the most economical ceramic tiles?

In the mean time, you may like to start demonstrating that UDDTs are a viable option, yourself and with selected community members, by applying this minimalist design:
inodoroseco.blogspot.com/2013/10/a-free-...ist-uddt-part-1.html
(and follow the link to Part 2)

People need to see and smell that UDDTs work and that the final "biosolids" are just beautiful soil, so it is good to get a headstart on this demonstration.

I also recommend this Minimalist UDDT as a test for each family of users, before a fancier, more permanent unit is built for them, to make sure that they really understand the concept and are ready to apply it. This would greatly reduce the rate of misused or disused units ... plus no one would want to be crossed off the list for being messy or not being able to follow instructions. (In the normal case, toilets are given to the users and we just hope that they have understood everything ... and many times UDDTs sit there like white elephants because no one dares to make the first deposit, since this is a new system that they are unfamiliar with.)

I look forward to your update on the project.

Re: Reply: UDDT Squat pan needed for Myanmar Project

Hey Chris
Thanks for your advice and apologies for delay in response, and really appreciate your comments. just these past 6 months have been a nightmare with work and legal issues.
I am pretty sold on obtaining plastic squat pans but still need to find a supplier.
Ill post a update in a few days on my struggles so far.
Once again humble apologies for delayed reply
Kind regards David

Re: Reply: UDDT Squat pan needed for Myanmar Project

Hi David,

I would like to contribute to the conversation that a prefabricated squat pan is not entirely necessary, especially if purchasing and shipping is complicated.

We build functional and presentable UDDTs for squatting with readily available materials from the hardware store: ceramic tiles, cement, chicken wire and thin steel rebar, forming a 3-cm-thick ferrocement floor, with a standard 25-cm-diameter plastic funnel (at roughly a 45° angle) to catch the urine.

inodoroseco.blogspot.com/2011/06/elegant...odoros-secos-de.html
(We currently put the sack in a plastic bin. This holds the sack nicely open and makes the changing of the sack much easier. The bin has holes in the bottom, to allow any excess liquid to drain into the soil. The bin also gives an added layer of protection against mischievous dogs, etc.)

The hole in the floor is 18 cm wide and 36 cm long, plus a point extending 14 cm farther on one end to accommodate the funnel. The edges of the hole can be made elegant and easy to clean by placing 3-cm-wide strips of ceramic tile there. The ceramic tiles can go directly into the fresh cement, despite the worries of some engineers.

This may require the mason to be a bit more skilled, but eliminates the need for a factory-made squat pan.

If the users in Myanmar are washers, a circular hole could be made 2 cm behind the drop hole, which a vertical 25-cm-diameter plastic funnel would fit into to catch the anal washwater. This water would optimally go a small constructed wetland that produces fruits for people, grass for animals or at least beautiful flowers.

I can give more detailed instructions, if people are interested.

I have also started experimenting with replacing the new steel elements with strips cut from tin cans. (So far, I have only added these strips as an additional layer below the chicken wire and rebar in one small floor, but there have been no problems whatsoever.)

If you want help on the ground, or via internet, let me know.

Best wishes,

Hi. We have been using plastic ECOPLATES for our ECOSAN toilets that we have constructed many schools and communities in the Diocese. We have been purchasing them for KENTAINERS in Nairobi. If you are interested we can facilitate you by linking you to them. Their ecoplates are not heavy easy to clean and use. They are also not expensive. For more information get intouch. Kindly see attached photos of ecosan toilets we constructed for St. Monica Bukokholo girls secondary in Bungoma county.

Re: UDDT Squat pan needed for Myanmar Project

Hi David, we faced similar issues in Cambodia, and developed a technique to build them locally in concrete - first using a clay mould then improved the process to use custom-made fibreglass moulds. Lately we have also been building them out of fibreglass but yes it is more expensive even in larger orders. As we were designing for floating houses, weight is important, but there are some trade-offs. Trying to make the concrete too thin or lightweight resulted in cracking, solved by adjusting the shape and reinforcement.

The other main issue with concrete was the surface quality and porosity. It can be difficult to find a suitable paint or sealant that will stay on, but is a good option if you can. Otherwise - we used fibreglass moulds with a smooth surface and a finer layer of concrete - as shown in the attached manuals. This also allows them to be produced much faster.

The other document I've attached is a review of some different options we have been working on.
Elmer Sayre at WAND Foundation in the Philippines also has some good methods for concrete options.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: UDDT Squat pan needed for Myanmar Project

You could also make them locally with concrete:
susana.org/lang-en/library/library?view=...eitem&type=2&id=1162

Also see these examples:

Painting them with a thick rubber based paint (or maybe even one with water repellent effect?) should result in a pretty nice looking pan.

Re: UDDT Squat pan needed for Myanmar Project

Thank you Florian
I have just contacted Heinz-peter

I currently have opportunity to install 67 uddt's in a village that can use the waste.
Will save them using the local fields where the owners are angry about this practice as they damage the crops and cause a sticky sandle hazard, ha ha. More seriously in the past the villagers have died due to snake bites and some of their women have been raped.

I have discussed the system and process with the village leader who has conveyed this to the people. no opposition was voiced and they are prepared for me to begin constructions.

The only hiccup i have is in obtaining the squat pans
I have tried to contact the suppliers in the giz list, but all to no avail
but i can source the ceramic type but need to buy a container load. bit expensive for a freelancer
I have contacted a number of fiberglass manufacturers over here but even this is expensive with quotes to build a mold cheap but the product at approx 55 USD each

So in essence im stuck in Myanmar, ready to build the uddt's and have no squat pans,,,,,,, grrrr
yes i know i need to be more organised in future

If any one else can help id really appreciate it

thanks again Florian much appreciated for your contact and ill wait and see what presents

Re: UDDT Squat pan needed for Myanmar Project

Hi,
as you work in Myanmar, I guess its best to look for import from China. The plastic UD squatting pans (second item in the GIZ list) have been imported to several countries and often been locally replicated. So I'd recommend to try to get hold of that producer. If the contact info in the GIZ list doesn't work any more, perhaps you can try to contact Heinz Peter Mang, he is a ecosan specialist based in Beijing and may know more: forum.susana.org/forum/profile/userid-1484

Best, Florian

UDDT Squat pan needed for Myanmar Project

Greetings one and all

Just a brief intro of who i am
Semi retired bloke from down under, Perth western Australia to be precise
Some qualifications include Chef, Environmental Health Officer, Builder and now I play in the dirt with earth moving gear
Currently have a passion to assist a developing country, in particular Myanmar

The dilemma I have is in obtaining a UDDT squat pan for use in a pilot and educational unit at a school in Yenangyaung Myanmar.
Once this is up and running i plan to build about 60 more in the premises of the outlying villagers, and continue as long as possible

I have tried all plastic suppliers listed in the GIZ supplier doco but to no avail.
Not that i want ceramic, but i can get 2500 units delivered, this just a bit big at this stage in the plan.

Has anyone one of these so that i can make a mould and ill fiberglass them myself
Ideally i would like to get it delivered to Yangon early March so i can make the mould over there or Perth if time does not permit

If you have any ideas on what i propose id welcome all constructive advise

Thanks Heaps and hope to hear from someone soon
David
