Hello,
I am Natalia Dejean from WECF France. I would like to share with all of you the demand of a local partner from Moldova.
Ormax Youth Cultural Association was founded on 26 October 1996 and registered on 28 January 1999 in Drochia, Republic of Moldova in order to improve the ecological situation by the empowerment of the civil society in the fields of the environmental and ecological development. Ormax contribute to the education of the population via information and environmental technologies promotion.
Ormax objectives:
- To move towards reducing the negative impact on natural resources and aquatic ecosystems by developing and implementing various environmental programs.
- To create consultative eco-centers in rural and urban areas.
- To share information on environmentally friendly technologies.
Ormax team consists of 4 active members and 12 support members for expertise in different fields. Ormax Youth Cultural Association is also supported by 850 volunteers, especially students of educational institutions where the association is implementing educational activities. Ormax organization operates its activities in Northern Moldova and is established in Drochia, Moldova. Currently, the organization is concerned about the water protection of the main water courses in Northern Moldova: Cubolta, Cainari, and Raut and is implementing environmental programs that aim to redress the environmental situation in the region.
During the last 2 years, ORMAX constructed 1 UDDT school toilet (for 167 pupils and 35 teachers) and 6 individual UDDT. Rural population is very interested in adopting this technology as they know that centralized water supply and canalization is not an affordable solution for Moldova. In order to promote UDDT as an affordable, ecological and safe sanitation for all in Moldova, ORMAX intend to produce UD seats with a mixture of cement, porcelain powder and pigments (as some WECF partners already do).
If some of you know where Ormax can find a mould at an affordable price, please contact him on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
Oleg Rotari, from Ormax, is the 2013 winner of UN “Water for Life Best Practice Award”. For more information, please see: www.wecf.eu/english/articles/2013/03/ormax_winning_un_award.php

Hello Natalia,
The prevalent material in East Africa for UD seats is plastic-based. The leading manufacturer, Kentainers (www.kentainers.com/), seem to suggest that most of their technologies (moulds) are from US and Norway. Please visit the website for details.

Hi Natalia,
did you check already with the Swiss funded ApaSan project in Moldova (implemented by Skat)? (your colleague, Claudia Wendland, has already been in contact with our colleagues in Moldova some time ago). We use locally produced plastic squatting pans and also locally produced cement toilet seats.
We are building 20-30 UDDT school toilets this year and also household toilets, an exchange with your partner Ormax would certainly be interesting for us (I'll check with my colleagues, perhaps this has happend already) as we are very interested in also supporting other organisations implementing UDDT school toilets.
Please contact our project coordinator in Moldova: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Hello Florian,
Thank you very much for your reply: two years ago, when Ormax constructed the school toilet in Hasnasenii Mari, we could manage to buy the plastic squatting pans locally by contacting the Swiss Agency in Moldova. But there is no more local production of cement seats, the company who was doing them is not existing anymore and the mould that our partners from Wisdom gave to them disappeared. It was the information we obtained last year from some local partners. But if you or your colleagues have other information about it, Oleg Rotari from Ormax will be happy to meet and exchange his experience and impressions with you.
And our research for a mould is still not achieved!
Kind regards

Hello Natalia,

I checked with my colleagues: they work with a local company that produce cement toilet seats using moulds from Mexico.
So definitly your colleagues should get in contact with us. I am sure that besides the toilet seats there are many more issues where experiences can be exchanged.

Best, Florian

Dear David,

there is a producer of UDDT mould (to make UDDT seats of concrete) in Kyrgyzstan, please see attached photo.
Where do you need the seats?
If you are interested, please let me know and I will put you in contact.

Claudia

Dear David, dear Claudia,
I am looking for a mould for an year now and no way to find it!!! Nice to see in picture, impossible to get in real!
Claudia, I was in contact with WECF partner in Kyrgyztan, Agerkesh. on 16/12/2013 they informed me that moulds are not produced any more beause of the lack of constructors. The material used for the mould production (fiberglass)was quate toxic, produced alergy and other deseases. For the moment, Agerkesh is looking for a more safe material for mould production but not producing any more...
David, please keep me informed if you succeed in finding the mould!
Best Natalia

I don't know much about these moulds, but I can help you with photos of moulds, maybe that helps.
I searched the SuSanA photodatabase by putting "mould" in the search field (www.flickr.com/photos/gtzecosan/collections/).
Here is what I found:

Mould used in Ecuador and Haiti:

Mould used in Kyrgyztan by WECF (no longer used, Natalie pointed out):

production of UDDT seats in Chyrak resource center by Sustainable sanitation, on Flickr

Here in Zimbabwe, they don't use a mould as such but make a concrete pedestal by using a plastic bucket as a starting point:

Applying concrete on the bucket by Sustainable sanitation, on Flickr

Here in this picture guide, Peter Morgan explains how to make simple urine diversion pedestals from concrete:
susana.org/lang-en/library/library?view=...p;type=2&id=1000

Morgan, P., Shangwa, A. (2009). How to make simple pedestals - The Chisungu Primary School Water and Sanitation project. Ecological Sanitation Research (EcoSanRes), Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI).

Concrete squatting urine diversion pan, self-made (Burkina Faso):

Step 1: Construction of the cover plate by Sustainable sanitation, on Flickr

Step 2: Finishing by Sustainable sanitation, on Flickr

And an example from Bangladesh which looks really good to me (urine diversion squatting pan from concrete):

susana.org/lang-en/library/library?view=...p;type=2&id=1162
Terre des hommes (2010). Casting of Ecosan Pan - Bangladesh. Terre des hommes. childrelief - www.tdh.ch.
This is a simple photographic manual on how to cast a urine diversion squatting pan. It includes a technical drawing, pictures and few descriptions.

So maybe give up looking for a mould and just make it yourself, especially if the total number is still low initially.

Regards,
Elisabeth
