Re: Reply: Guidelines and Policies on FSM with a global focus

The attached publication of the Directorate of Municipal Administration, Government of Karnataka, India, captioned: Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant: Devanahalli, gives more stress on treatment, when it comes to FSM. According to the report, the FSM Value Chain comprises of capture, storage, transport, treatment and reuse.

The report gives advantages of aerobic systems over anaerobic systems. These are:

Aerobic bio-toilets uses multi strain aerobic bacterial culture where as anaerobic biological toilet uses single strain bacteria culture.
Anaerobic bio digestion is extremely slow process while aerobic digestion completes within 24hours.
Aerobic bio digestion generates neutral water & only traces of CO2. Anaerobic bio digestion generates large volumes of Methane, which is a greenhouse gas and emission is banned globally.
Anaerobic bio digestion generates huge volumes of sludge as digestion is not complete while no sludge remains from aerobic bio digestion.
Aerobic Bio toilets require a very small volume of bacterial culture for charging while half of the tank of anaerobic bio toilet needs to be filled with bacteria.
Aerobic Bio digester tank size is nearly half in size of Anaerobic tank.
Aerobic bacteria is freely available in nature; easy to propagate and store.

Thought-provoking Thailand case studies are also given at the end.

Re: Reply: Guidelines and Policies on FSM with a global focus

Dear Sharda,

I suggest you have a look at the international Fecal Sludge Management Conferences articles and resources. FSM4 which took place last year in Chennai in India has a website with interesting resources. You can access it here: www.fsm4.susana.org/
IWA also published Guidelines on FSM and it is part of the reference documents in the sector.

Guidelines and Policies on FSM with a global focus

Hello All,

I am compiling a list of latest resources related to FSM guidelines and policies at international level. This list is not focused on city level case studies or national level policies. Some of the documents I could think of are:
  • EAWAG has published Faecal sludge management: systems approach for implementation and operation and Compendium of Sanitation Systems and Technologies
  • IWMI has published several documents related to resource recovery and reuse with a focus on fecal sludge reuse.
  • Doulaye Kone's work related to business analysis in Africa and Asia

I am sure I am missing several other organizations and documents with an international focus or broader revelance than a national level policy document or city level case study.

If any of you think of any pertinent document, can you please add them in the response to this thread?

thanks and regards,
Sharada
