Re: Toilettes sèches en République Démocratique du Congo

Dear Myango,

Thank you for sharing your Powerpoint presentation.

(Just a comment on the numbers)... If 24% have access to latrines and 60% practice open defecation, what about the other 16%?

About UDDTs in schools in the DRC, I would like to invite you to see my suggestions on this thread:
forum.susana.org/forum/categories/27-tra...handwashing-stations

Please let us know how things go and if we can be of any help.

Best wishes,

Re: Toilettes sèches en République Démocratique du Congo

Bonjour,

The population of Goma and its surroundings is faced with the problem of drinking water, hygiene and health. At least 75% of people put their lives in danger by consuming water from the lake and rain, because according to the Goma Volcano Observatory, this water is contaminated with sulfur dioxide given off by the Nyirangongo volcano. This gas, he reminds, is dangerous to the human body, at 4 am to Himbi, area along Lake Kivu on the outskirts of Goma, in North Kivu, DRC. Men, women and young girls come get water to the "beach people", one of the biggest points of drawing water from Goma. Many residents of Keshero, Katindo, Himbi, Majengo and other underserved areas drinking water travel long distances to fetch water.

This makes life difficult for women and children who have to travel many kilometers to acquire not even one drop of water.
The lack of sanitary facilities in North Kivu creates enormous problems in several neighborhoods in the city of Goma and the surrounding areas, including environmental pollution, large social problems and dangerous environment, as well as increasing significantly the appearance of deadly epidemics such as cholera.

Without toilets, individuals and their environment are at risk of contamination of fresh water and ground water. This is because human feces contain infectious pathogens and often fatal, such as viruses, bacteria, worms and parasites.

Women, girls and young children are the most vulnerable group suffering from a lack of basic sanitation in many respects. Many children die because of contaminated water from human waste
