Getting ready for World Toilet Day on 19 Nov 2017 - Is the theme already set in stone (why waste water?)?

Dear all,

The annual theme for World Toilet Day is usually the same as for World Water Day in the same year.
Is it already set in stone that World Water Day will also be under “why waste water?” this year? If not, I would like to put a case forward that it’s perhaps not quite ideal:
- Firstly, that play on words does not work so well for everyone, particularly non-native English speakers. There is anyhow confusion whether "wastewater" should be spelled in one word or two (my observation is that nowadays it is usually spelled in one word but around 20 years ago it was also spelled in two words).
- Secondly, it seems ironic to tell 2.5 billion people who don’t have anything resembling a flush toilet and probably quite low access to water that they should save water. They don’t have much water to speak of in the first place. We actually often want them to use more water, e.g. for handwashing and other hygiene needs.
- So I am not sure how you would want to make that connection or is it mean to speak more to people in the wealthy countries?

If it's already set in stone then I wonder if there are any small tweaks we could use to make it work for us.

For themes of previous years, check here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Toilet_Day#Annual_themes

- 2016 Toilets and Jobs (same theme as 2016 World Water Day.)
- 2015 Toilets and Nutrition. The hashtag #WeCantWait was used to promote WTD on twitter.
- 2014 Equality and Dignity. Ending open defecation and putting a spotlight on the risk of assault and violence against women and girls where inequalities in access to sanitation exist.
- 2013 Tourism and Water: Protecting our Common Future
- 2012 I give a shit, do you?

Elisabeth

Re: Getting ready for World Toilet Day on 19 Nov 2017 - Is the theme already set in stone (why waste water?)?

Dear Elisabeth,

Thank you so much for opening this discussion.
The theme for World Toilet Day is the same as for the World Water Day this year - wastewater. The campaign title is however not finalised, but the overall idea is to focus on the fact that for billions of people around the world, sanitation systems are either non-existent or ineffective. And that we need everyone’s poo to be captured, transported, treated and disposed of in a safe and sustainable way, in order to achieve SDG 6.

Best regards,
Anna
