Re: 22 Sept. SuSanA side event at IWA World Water Congress and Exhibition in Lisbon, Portugal

Dear All

Just in case those of you in Lisbon for the IWA WW congress have missed it, there will be a SuSanA side event on
22 Sept. from 15h30 to 17h30.

Room: 1.06

The side event is entitled "Determining system boundaries for climate mitigation in sanitation programmes using an energy footprint perspective"

Organised by: Borda, IWA and the SuSanA secretariat held by GIZ

After a couple of presentation inputs we will have an open fishbowl discussion which will allow everyone to engage in the discussion.

Here is a short description of what we hope to discuss in the side event:

"Sanitation systems include the user interface, conveyance, treatment and safe reuse or disposal, the combinations of technologies that can be implemented within a sanitation system and their energy footprint varies greatly from context to context. Therefore a potential to reduce Green House Gas (GHG) in sanitation systems exists. As more climate mitigation programmes are planned the potential that improved sanitation systems offer to reduce energy consumption presents an opportunity to consider the ideal system boundaries and their impact on the energy footprint.

An energy footprint perspective takes into consideration both energy consumption as well as embodied energy. With consideration of the energy footprint alongside more traditional economic analysis, decision makers would have a better perspective to judge investment decisions in sanitation systems that should contribute to climate mitigation. The challenge is where to set the system boundary.

The discussion would look at the challenges of determining the system boundaries and the impact that moving system boundaries have on the energy footprint. The discussion will include questions like; when looking at defining the ideal system boundaries for assessing a wastewater system holistically should embodied energy be considered? What happens to the energy footprint when the system boundary is expanded to take into consideration the impact of reusing wastewater in agriculture? Many more questions will come from your interactive participation in the side event."

Happy to have some further discussion ideas here and any points of correction.
Kind regards
Trevor

Re: IWA World Water Congress 2014 - Water and Energy Workshop, Monday, September 22, 2014

Hi All

just in case you have not been able to find this workshop quickly in the programme for Monday 22 September, it is part of Track 2 and in room 1.09.

Below is the updated workshop description:
"Energy & Carbon Neutral Utilities
Chair: Corinne Trommsdorff IWA
Can water & wastewater utilities be carbon & energy neutral by 2030?

The workshop will capitalise on existing knowledge, and share experiences
of utilities and water sector professionals to build a toolbox of technologies
and concepts for consideration by utilities starting or continuing an energy
efficiency approach. This is an on-going process continuing after the
workshop. Gustaf Olsson (IEA Lund University, Sweden) discusses the water
cycle for energy saving avoidance and generation opportunities. A matrix of
solutions, initiated by IWA Water Climate and Energy Programme, will be
shared and developed. Sub-groups focusing on water treatment, distribution,
wastewater treatment and households led by Daniel Nolasco (NOLASCO y
Asociados S. A., Argentina), Jose Porro (University of Girona, Spain), Enrique
Cabrera (Universidad Politecnica de Valencia, Spain) and Steve Kenway
(University of Queensland, Australia). Benchmarking, indicators, technologies
and case studies are covered."

Look forward to seeing you there.
Regards
Trevor

Re: IWA World Water Congress 2014 - Water and Energy Workshop, Monday, September 22, 2014

WATER & ENERGY: Towards Energy & Carbon Neutral Utilities (Monday, September 22, 10:30 am)
Design Concepts and Technologies that can lead to Energy and Carbon Neutrality for Water Utilities

Chair: Corinne Trommsdorff, IWA

Water and wastewater companies are typically energy intensive (10%-35% of their total operational costs). A large number of utilities have established energy saving and energy generation programmes. They have implemented treatment design concepts or specific technologies to achieve significant reductions in their energy and carbon footprint, up to neutrality in specific cases. Many of these measures are economically beneficial, which is the main driver for change. The focus of this workshop is on reducing the energy and carbon footprint of existing utilities rather than achieving energy neutrality, which may not be economically viable for existing utilities.

The objective of the workshop is to capitalize on the existing knowledge and further share experiences of utilities and other water sector professionals, in order to build a toolbox of technologies and concepts that ought to be considered by utilities starting or continuing an energy efficiency approach. Building this toolbox is an on-going process and will continue after the workshop.

Initial presentations will cover the overall water cycle for energy saving) avoidance and generation opportunities from Gustaf Olsson (IEA Lund University, Sweden). In a second step, a matrix of solutions initiated by IWA Water Climate and Energy (WCE) Programme will be shared and further populated during the workshop. Sub-groups focusing on water treatment, distribution, wastewater treatment and households led by Daniel Nolasco (NOLASCO y Asociados S. A. , Argentina), Jose Porro (University of Girona, Spain), Enrique Cabrera (Universidad Politecnica de Valencia, Spain) and Steve Kenway (University of Queensland, Australia). On each of these topics benchmarking and indicators, technologies, and case studies will be shared and discussed.

IWA World Water Congress, Lisbon, Portugal on 21-26 September 2014 - 22 Sept. SuSanA side event & workshop on energy neutral WWTP - feedback

Dear Forum users,

The International Water Association (IWA) organises the high-profile IWA World Water Congress and Exhibition every two years. The 2014 IWA World Water Congress & Exhibition will be held in Lisbon, Portugal on 21-26 September 2014.

IWA expects the Lisbon congress will draw upwards of 5,000 participants. Many will be IWA members. These individuals and companies represent every aspect of the water cycle, from research to practice. They work in all facets of water, from big-picture issues such as conservation of water resources, through to the science and management of practicalities such as drinking water, wastewater and stormwater.

Themes include:
•Cities and Basins of the Future
•Utility Management, Assets, Customers and Water Economics
