Re: Internet-in-a-Box launching in about a week (contains all of Wikipedia's health care and sanitation related content)

Hey All

A bunch of us have built a device we call Internet-in-a-Box over the last few years. We are about to launch the device for sale. It contains all of Wikipedia's health care and sanitation related content. The devices cost about USD 27 per unit.

Further details here meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Internet-in-a-Box

Re: Offline Medical Wikipedia App (built on Kiwix) - includes sanitation topics

As you can image, there are tens of thousands of Apps available in the medical field to help doctors, patients, nurses etc. All the more exciting that this review put the Offline Medical Wikipedia App which we have spoken about before in this thread, and which we have been contributing to, into the Top-6 of recommended medical Apps for 2017!

See here:
www.advisoryhq.com/articles/best-medical...s-patients-students/

+++++++

Medical professionals, medical students, and patients have tens of thousands of apps and software programs to choose from, which provide a range of informative resources and tools.

Some of the things that can be managed with medical applications include:

- Reference
- Medical education
- EMR
- Patient monitoring
- Patient education and care
- Imaging

Using the best medical apps and medical software can help doctors, nurses, and other care providers diagnose and manage patient information, and they can serve as resources for things such as diseases, conditions, and also medications. Medical apps for patients can help empower patients to be more knowledgeable about their health, among other purposes.

Medical Wikipedia Review

Medical Wikipedia offers a collection of healthcare articles and other information powered by Kiwix.

Key reasons Medical Wikipedia is one of the best medical apps and a leading medical information app are below:

Suitable for Anyone

What’s great about this medical application is that it’s usable and relevant for anyone. For example, this can be a doctors app, but it could also be useful to medical students as well as patients.

It’s a medical app that provides general information that can be useful for an incredibly wide variety of purposes, and that flexibility is an important reason it’s part of this ranking of medical applications.

Accessible

Once you download this top medical application, the information is available whenever and wherever you are, without Internet access. This means this medical information app can be accessed whether you’re in the developing world or the middle of nowhere, as well as if you’re in a major city.

It’s also one of the free medical apps included in this ranking.

This medical application is also available in several different languages.

Essentially this useful medical information app is an accessible, comprehensive, informative medical encyclopedia.

It’s user-friendly and provides in-depth information and terminology that could be helpful to any users, as well as images and other information.

It includes healthcare articles as well as disease, medication, anatomy, and sanitation information.

++++++

Here is the link if you want to try it out and install it on your smartphone:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=or...xcustomwikimed&hl=en

Further information is also here: meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Project_Med/App
It's already available in 10 languages, although not surprisingly the English version is the biggest one. Other languages include Arabic, German Spanish, Persian, French, Japanese, Odia (also spelled Oriya or Odiya), Portuguese, Modern Standard Chinese.

It makes me really proud of all those people who have put hours and hours into improving these Wikipedia articles in the medical field which have become part of this app containing the information offline - in particular James Heilman of course!

And even better that sanitation as a topic is included! It means that this very popular App includes currently about 500 Wikipedia articles touching on sanitation topics (and tagged with WikiProject Sanitation). If you want to know which ones they are, please see here:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProj...ality_and_importance

If you want to get involved in this initative and help to improve sanitation-related Wikipedia articles together with others, and you are not yet on our e-mail list of volunteers, please drop me a line: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

By the way, we will soon announce our plans for another Wikipedia improvement drive in preparation for World Toilet Day in November (a bit similar to the one we had for World Water Day in March, see here: forum.susana.org/198-wikipedia/20407-sus...tinue-to-edit4impact)

Re: Offline Medical Wikipedia App (built on Kiwix) - includes sanitation topics

Some updates about this Offline Medical Wikipedia App which includes all the sanitation articles from Wikipedia, too:

James Heilman wrote on July 21 in the HIFA Dgroup:

Hey All

Today we launched a second language of our offline medical Wikipedia app
(Chinese). It can be downloaded from google play here
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=or...kiwixcustomwikimedzh
and
of course is not only free but freely licensed.

The English version
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=or...x.kiwixcustomwikimed
has
been downloaded more than 15k times with about 80% of downloads being from
the developing world. The app currently only works for android. We hope to
come out with further language versions soon and are working on additional
methods of distribution.

Email me if you are interested in getting involved.

++++++

This offline version takes all articles from Wikipedia that have been tagged with one of the following four Wikipedia projects:

WP:MED (medicine)
WP:Sanitation *
WP:Anatomy
WP:Pharmacology

* This is of course the one which I have been contributing to (see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Sanitation or see here on the Forum: forum.susana.org/forum/categories/198-wi...le-bit-of-their-time )

On Twitter I saw this information on 15 June:

KIWIX ‏@KiwixOffline
Our #Wikipedia #Offline #Medical #Encyclopaedia for #Android is meanwhile in the TOP20 medical apps @WikiProjectMed
play.google.com/store/search?q=medical&c=apps

It's nice to know that sanitation as a topic is firmly embedded with all the other healthcare articles in this App which has doctors, medical students, healthcare providers etc. in developing countries as their target audience. Let's continue to improve the scope and quality of the sanitation articles on Wikipedia!

Re: Offline Medical Wikipedia App - adding more sanitation related topics where they overlap

All of them is easiest. Not exactly sure why WM CH (Wikimedia Switzerland) has taken this on. They are one of the bigger chapters by the way.

Re: Offline Medical Wikipedia App - adding more sanitation related topics where they overlap

Would you take even those sanitation-related articles that have a low quality rating so far (like stub, start or C)?

And I wonder how come Wikimedia Switzerland is at the forefront of this, even though it is presumably rather small? Is there a particular reason for that, e.g. funding support by the government or a large NGO like Caritas or alike?

Offline Medical Wikipedia App - adding more sanitation related topics where they overlap

Hey All

We at Wiki Project Med Foundation and Wikimedia Switzerland have recent updated our offline medical app for android. The current version contains all English medical, pharmaceutical, and anatomy content including images. It is fairly large at about 1Gb so download it when you have decent wifi. You will than have access to content when cell reception either does not exist or is too expensive.

Like all of Wikipedia it is free and under an open license. We are working to develop similar apps in other languages.

While some sanitation related topics are currently included as they overlap with medicine we plan
specifically to add the rest of them in the next version.

The app includes all the Wikipedia articles that are tagged by the project WikiProject Sanitation (see here ).
